Iconic percussions

Steve Reich - Drumming - Slagwerk Den Haag

Slagwerk Den Haag (The Hague Percussion) appeared in full strength at the Zuiderstrandtheater, The Hague, during the three monthly new music Festival "Dag-in-de-Branding" Saturday 28 March 2015. In the lobby of the theatre the bongos, marimbas and vibraphones and the stages for singers and piccolo player are set up.

Artistic leader Fedor Teunisse:"Yes, Steve Reich's "Drumming" is an iconic piece for percussion. It is as iconic as Bach's Wohltemperierte Klavier. Look at the instrumentation of "Drumming". It's got wood, metal and sheets. The basics of percussion. Not only is it iconic in general but also for us Slagwerk Den Haag. It is a "mainstay" on our repertoire, In the past we performed only pieces for the ensemble as a whole. But now we have become more of a collective. We play pieces for variable number of players. Because those pieces are also interesting. But this also made sense for dimension of stages, budgets etc. And we also encourage each member to propose and bring about their own ideas and projects." A final tuning of the bongos by Joey Marijs with a wrench to tension the sheets to the correct tune. While in the background a ship crosses the deserted ferry harbour.

And Niels Meliefste started the piece by playing the bongo. Soon followed by Fedor Teunisse, Joey Marijs an Pepe Garcia. In the second part the marimbas took over accompanied by two female voices to accentuate the percussion sounds. Then the heavy metal sounds of the vibraphones take over. With also a significant role for piccolo player Felicia van den End. The music sizes down to the sounds of one vibraphone introducing the final part in which whole of the ensemble participates.

What a rythm. What a mastership of the players. The vast audience listened spellbound. A truly great performance. And all that on a rainy saturday afternoon.

Present and congratulating the Ensemble afterwards was Festival Boardmember, former director of the Royal Conservatoire The Hague and he himself a percussionist, Wim Vos.
