GOLF and BASEBALL/SOFTBALL on stamps (click flag for Dutch version)
Worldwide there are millions of golf-players and there are millions of collectors interested in stamps. Some golf-players not only frequent the golf-course but also collect stamps with......GOLF scenes!
You probably wonder whether they exist. Well, they do. Japan was the first country to issue a stamp with a view of the Mount Unzen golf-course in 1953 and since then there have been numerous countries that have also issued stamps and or blocks of stamps with GOLF-scenes.
The same goes for Baseball/Softball. Sports that are very popular in e.g. America, Canada, Cuba, Nicaragua, but especially in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia and in Europe where Holland and Italy are the predominant countries. The first baseball stamp dates back to 1934 and was issued by the Philippines, while the first American stamp appeared on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Baseball in the USA.
Collecting a special theme is becoming more popular than collecting stamps of a specific country. Albums with pre-printed pages are only available for country collections, whereas a theme collector has to do a lot of searching, which gives more satisfaction than simply filling in squares.
In January 1991 two collectors decided to join forces. Leon Vanverre from Antwerp (Belgium) and Rob van Tuyl from Alphen aan den Rijn (Holland) started a collectors-club and called it SWING TIME PHILATELY with the intention of bringing collectors together to see whether it was feasible to put together a fully illustrated catalogue for Golf as well as for Baseball/Softball. At the top 120 members had enlisted.
Most of them come from Holland, but there are also collectors from America, Germany, France, Belgium and Italy.
Now there is a
fully illustrated catalogue with Golf-scenes on
all stamps and blocks of stamps.
Arnold Palmer, Jack Niklaus, Gary Player, Bobby Jones, Severiano Ballesteros, Colin Montgomery, Annika Sorenstam, Tony Jacklin and of course Tiger Woods are featured but also famous golf-courses such as Carnoustie, St.Andrews, Turnberry, Muirfield, Royal Troon, Tryall Golf Course, Dubai Creek and Golf Club, Nuwara Eliya, Royal Jersey Golfcourse. etc. A magnificent collection.
Furthermore, there is also a fully illustrated catalogue for Baseball/Softball with beautiful illustrations of stadiums, matches, famous happenings, the Hall of Fame and of course celebrities like Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Roberto Clemente, Honus Wagner, Joe DiMaggio, Reggie Jackson, Ernie Banks, Marc McGwire, Ruben Sosa, Hank Aaron, Ozzy Smith and others.
The catalogues are written in English and the stamps and sheets are numbered, mentioning the country and date of issue, stampface value, description of the scene, whether a perforated or imperforated version has also been issued and the catalogue numbers of Scott (USA), Michel (Germany), Yvert & Tellier (France) and Stanley Gibbons (Great Britain). There is also an extensive index that makes it considerable easier to search for certain issues. And last but not least both catalogues are adapted at least once a year. Members receive up-dated sheets annually so there is no need to buy a new catalogue each year!
Swing Time Philately has worldwide contacts with hundreds of collectors in order to obtain information on new issues on the subject of Golf and Baseball/Softball as fast as possible.
What else has Swing Time Philately to offer? An information bulletin is published regularly with information on new issues, discoveries, all sorts of background information, nice-to-know items and two long lists of stamps on offer, blocks of stamps, First Day Covers, phone-cards etc.
Swing Time Philately organizes an annual Swing Time Golf Tournament for the golf-members and until 2016 an annual club day was organised.
