Hope the sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.

Hope is one of the most beautiful topics in the bible to study, when I went to a word-faith church, hope was a lesser form of faith, while the bible says that we have faith, hope and love.

Three distinct spiritual blessings and one is not without the other.

As a young Christian believer during the time we lived in Canada, there was a certain safety about being in church and among believers, the down side was that there was little challenge to the faith, in my experience they were happy with their own safety and protected life styles and in so doing there was little risk in being a member of that church. The Pastor however was young and wanted to bring activity in the church, preached on evangelism, creating groups, and new challenges, but the hardness of their hearts broke the heart of the Pastor and after 3 some years he was forced to moved on with his family to another more evangelistic church where people had a passion for the lost.

This church was like stale bread, and a church of duty and routine, almost a "settled" church, so settled that they lost the passion of Christ. The church of Laodicea.
Revelation 3:14-17 is a pretty good description of that church.

The lust of the eye, a deceiving experience.

After the Pastor left, we were compelled to find another church and came to a beautiful "church building" , when you walked in the surroundings captured your imagination, I felled right at home, the impact of the atmosphere had touched my feelings and I truly believed this was the Lord's presence.

The church was a Word-Faith church, practicing the Teachings of Kenneth Hagin "faith" was the miracle cure for all you wanted, houses, cars, money, health, everything related to getting and experiencing one crazy thing after the other, with the wildest testimonies, and truly some amazing things are happening if you put your faith to it. But the church died soon, why?

Faith without love

Faith was present without godly love, and the bible says that faith without love will profit you nothing, the church was very much focused on the here and now and the here and now is not hope, hope is the expectation of good things to happen.

This the great tragedy in the charismatic movement, they don't have the love of God, that intentional, spiritual devotion such as is inspired by God in us

1 Cor 13:1 IF I [can] speak in the tongues of men and [even] of angels, but have not love (that reasoning, intentional, spiritual devotion such as is inspired by God's love for and in us), I am only a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

1 Cor 13:2 And if I have prophetic powers (the gift of interpreting the divine will and purpose), and understand all the secret truths {and} mysteries and possess all knowledge, and if I have [sufficient] faith so that I can remove mountains, but have not love (God's love in me) I am nothing (a useless nobody).

The love we experienced was primarily based on the way we feel, and not necessarily the Love of God, there was affectionate love, it made you feel good, but the love Christ showed forth in Rom. 5:8 and John 13:13 was a different kind of love.

Rom. 5:8 But God shows {and} clearly proves His [own] love for us by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) died for us.
John 15:13 No one has greater love [no one has shown stronger affection] than to lay down (give up) his own life for his friends.

Back to the bible and the sayings of Jesus is what we need in these end times and to cleanup the church from all the passion for worldliness and personal gain based on feelings.

Faith without hope

Faith without love will result in faith without hope, if you believe you can manipulate God through your faith (say and believe it, you will have what ever you say), (though God is sensitive to people with faith in Him) you will loose your hope and trust in God, through frustration and unanswered prayer, because of the wrong teachings you have received, (read James chapter 4), since God cannot be manipulated by faith. Only faith that works through love touches His heart and is inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Gal 5:6 For [if we are] in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor un circumcision counts for anything, but only faith activated {and} energized {and} expressed {and} working through love.

Faith without working through love, is a hard, cold, worldly, faith and makes provision for the flesh only and cannot please God, it is manipulative (which is a form of witchcraft) and the things you receive are not in the will of God.
But when faith works through love, we learn obedience through the things we suffer, we are assured of the outcome of our faith will bring healing, blessing, righteousness and at the end salvation by the grace of God.

1 Pet 1:8 Without having seen Him, you love Him; though you do not [even] now see Him, you believe in Him and exult {and} thrill with inexpressible and glorious (triumphant, heavenly) joy.

1 Pet 1:9 [At the same time] you receive the result (outcome, consummation) of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

But this kind of faith doesn't come cheap, it is therefore that many people choose the counterfeit faith which provides instantly the lust of the flesh, but the faith we need, is tested through endurance, against all lustful passions and sin. Rom 5:4 And endurance (fortitude) develops maturity of character (approved faith and tried integrity). And character [of this sort] produces [the habit of] joyful and confident hope of eternal salvation.

We cannot live without hope

* Our hope is an anchor for the soul, stable, certain. It will stand against the testing of time and reaches into eternity, it is anchored behind the veil in the Rock of Ages, the Lord Jesus Christ, our high priest and our forerunner.

Heb 6:18 This was so that, by two unchangeable things [His promise and His oath] in which it is impossible for God ever to prove false {or} deceive us, we who have fled [to Him] for refuge might have mighty indwelling strength {and} strong encouragement to grasp {and} hold fast the hope appointed for us {and} set before [us].

Heb 6:19 [Now] we have this [hope] as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul [it cannot slip and it cannot break down under whoever steps out upon it--a hope] that reaches farther {and} enters into [the very certainty of the Presence] within the veil,
Heb 6:20 Where Jesus has entered in for us [in advance], a Forerunner having become a High Priest forever after the order (with the rank) of Melchizedek.

* We cannot live without hope, faith is the under laying steady assurance on which hope is build, Faith will bring fort hope and both are important and necessary. But we have to keep in the right order, they are designed to function in a right relationship with each other. It is just impossible to survive without hope.

Rom 15:13 May the God of your hope so fill you with all joy and peace in believing [through the experience of your faith] that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound {and} be overflowing (bubbling over) with hope.

* God is not only a god of peace, the God of righteousness, the God of power, the God of joy, but also the God of hope. So when you are filled with joy en peace through your faith, and the result is that you are overflowing with hope.

We have to learn to practice hope.

1 Thess. 5:8 But we belong to the day; therefore, let us be sober and put on the breastplate (corslet) of faith and love and for a helmet the hope of salvation.

Often we lose hope because of the way we think, based on what we experience and feel,

And the basis of our hope, faith, has been replaced with what we feel.

During the time we lived in Canada I went through a time of testing to the point that reason couldn't find a way out. It was then that I was holding on to two scripture verses, Rom 8-28 en Phil. 4:13 .

Rom 8:28 We are assured {and} know that [God being a partner in their labor] all things work together {and} are [fitting into a plan] for good to {and} for those who love God and are called according to [His] design {and} purpose.

Phil 4:13 I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ's sufficiency].

Because I did not understand the circumstances in my life at that time and the suffering I went through (it seemed useless at the time) that by Rom 8-28 I found purpose and meaning in what I had to suffer, knowing that whatever bad thing I was experiencing, He was able to make it work for me for good. That gave me hope.

And because I felled I wasn't able to hold on and come through this period, I was holding onto the promise of Phil. 4:13. I used to repeat these verses over and over again, when feelings of despair wanted to overtake me.

Faith in God's word and holding onto the promise, gave me the hope I needed to endure.

* When we look at Rom 4:18 we read see that Abraham was hoping in faith to receive the promise.

Rom 4:18 [For Abraham, human reason for] hope being gone, hoped in faith that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been promised, So [numberless] shall your descendants be.

* Abraham believed and the result was hope, first was there faith and second as a result of that faith hope.

Faith is the assurance of the things we hope for, In the letter to the Hebrews we read in chapter 11:1

Heb 11:1 NOW FAITH is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see {and} the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses].

How beautiful Paul explains than this hope in which we stand

Rom 8:24 For in [this] hope we were saved. But hope [the object of] which is seen is not hope. For how can one hope for what he already sees?

Rom 8:25 But if we hope for what is still unseen by us, we wait for it with patience {and} composure. (in the assurance, provided by faith), (believing and trusting God))

Now we have to maintain our hope.

As we stated earlier, our thought life must not be based on feelings, although feelings speak loud into our well being we tend to bend what we think towards what we experience.

Therefore we need to protect our thinking, so that the way we think is the way we feel and not the other way around. God provided us with the helm of salvation Eph 6:17 protect our thinking.

When we have the assurance of salvation through faith as a gift from God Efes., 2:8-9

* We have the basis for the helmet of salvation, if you look for a reference you will find 1 Thess. 5:8 in which it says the following, 1 Thess 5:8 But we belong to the day; therefore, let us be sober and (making decision) put on the breastplate (corslet) of faith and love and for a helmet the hope of salvation.

* Here it is called the helmet of hope of salvation, our spiritual experience will be out of balance, and incomplete, as long as we haven't understood the place hope takes as a protection of our thinking.

* 1 Cor 13:13 And so faith, hope, love abide [faith--conviction and belief respecting man's relation to God and divine things; hope--joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation; love--true affection for God and man, growing out of God's love for and in us], these three; but the greatest of these is love.

* From the context of this chapter we see clearly that there are three remaining realities in the spiritual life of a Christian, all other things will be done away with 1Cor 13:8, all other things have their purpose, but only three things remain, faith, hope and love. Fait will focus on the present and is from the heart and hope is focused on the future, and proceeds from our thinking

* Therefore we need the protection of our thinking from the helmet of hope, that will provide us with us a solid and certain expectation of good things to come.

* Then my thoughts are my servants and not my master.

* Our hope is an anchor for the soul, stable, certain. It will stand against the testing of time and reaches into eternity, it is anchored behind the veil in the Rock of Ages, the Lord Jesus Christ, our high priest and our forerunner.

It is our responsibility to train our thinking towards hope

* A boat is drifting on the unstable, constant changing, uncertain element water and the anchor is thrown out through the instability of the water, and fastens itself in the bottom or behind a rock. There you'll find stability and safety.

If you fasten your anchor through the water (the time) in the Rock (eternity) you are safe and certain. When you give yourself in your relationship with Jesus, than you fasten your anchor in the Rock of Ages. All the storms and hurricanes, that rage in your life, won't be able to pull from that Rock and the name of our anchor and the way we fasten our anchor, is hope.

Now it it our turn to train our thinking towards hoop.

This was for me a difference between peace and storm, when I was trained to exercise faith to fill my every need, I was in constant battle, constant uncertain, constant busy to call the things who were not, trying to line up my emotions with my faith confessions.

Not after I rediscovered hope again, I realized that I missed this valuable part for my well-being, hope, faith without hope will toss you to and forward with every storm, every wind and doctrine, but when I learned to give myself in my relationship with Jesus, surrender myself into His care, I found the Rock and fastened my anchor and the result was hope. Fully trusting and acknowledging the sovereignty of God over my life and future. I was fastened in the Rock of all Ages and the moment you thrust yourself , you throw out the anchor by faith, in the rock, and we hope for all things, all that God has promised. A sure and steadfast connection is called hope.

To train your thinking towards hope is not an easy thing, it will take many years, it took Derek Prince 5 years to train his thinking, and it took me 8 years to rediscover the hope I once possessed, hope that was destroyed by the word-faith teachings, but it is worth every moment and effort, once you posses it it will provide you with a solid sure life that will stay on course and will not drift far from the Rock of Ages to which it is fastened.

Hope, a protective shield for depression and despair.

So valuable is hope that it will protect us against despair and depression.

* To be delivered from fear and depression and despair is usually not the biggest problem, the bible says in; Joel 2:32 And whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered {and} saved, and in Isaiah Is 61:3 To grant [consolation and joy] to those who mourn in Zion--to give them an ornament (a garland or diadem) of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, the garment [expressive] of praise instead of a heavy, burdened, {and} failing spirit--that they may be called oaks of righteousness [lofty, strong, and magnificent, distinguished for uprightness, justice, and right standing with God], the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.

When you pray this specific prayer you can be delivered from the Spirit of heaviness as the KJV puts it, Derek Prince prayed this prayer based on Joel 2:32 and Isaiah 61:3 and put those two together and was instantly delivered from the pressure and oppression of the spirit of heaviness, after his deliverance he realized that it was up to him to stay free, through the training of your mind towards hope.

In his case it was caused by this spirit, in my case it was through wrong teaching and for giving the blessed hope, not it's proper place, I was delivered through the washing of the word, piece by piece, and revelations from God's Word.

Staying free by the power of God and his weapons

* You see it is our responsibility keep the freedom we have received, by God's power and his weapons, and for many of us we are most vulnerable in our thinking, therefore take up the Helmet of Salvation (your surety of salvation) the Helmet of Hope! (your unchangeable connection to Jesus) to Protect you thinking, keeping them under control and in line with the Word of God, and the results are the garments of praise!!

Let me help you with this prayer that Dr. Charles Stanley prayed

Lord, by faith here's what I'm doing right now, to prepare myself for the coming day.

I am putting on the helmet of Salvation and Hope, help me to have the full assurance, that I am saved for all eternity, that the blood of Jesus is my protection and sets me free. That You see me, as the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. Let this hope, that is in me now, come upon others and let me be an instrument for others to have part in your saving power, for Salvation, Hope and Eternal life. Amen
