    Oberwesel

The earliest traces of the Bermann family can be found in the Rhein-Hunsrück area, in the village Oberwesel.

The first records of Jewish people in Oberwesel date from 1241, when they had to pay 20 Mark Silver.

In 1287, Oberwesel is the centre of a riot. The Jews in Oberwesel are accused of killing a Christian boy, and more then hundred Jews were killed. In 1288 Rudolf von Habsburg punished the inhabitants, by letting them pay a fine. In 1337 the citizens plundered the Jewish houses. Archbishop Balduin of Trier, confiscated the plundered goods, and forced the city to pay the Jews for their damages.

In 1349 the inhabitants of Oberwesel forced all the Jews out of town.

In 1372 there is the first record of Jewish life again, and in 1452 there was a Synagogue.

The oldest gravestone preserved on the cemetery dates from 1718 or 1738. In 1808 there lived 33 Jews. And around 1852 they had an Synagogue again.

In this town lived Bermann Samuel, Bermann was born around  1741 in Mozel/Osann  a village near the Mosel and not far from Zell.

From the Name adoption list from 1808, we know that Bermann was 66 years old at that time and a widower. When Bermann and his wife came to Oberwesel is unknown.  Bermann changed his name into Samuel BERMANN. His sons also used the surname BERMANN since this time. Samuel had 3 children:

Marcus Samuel born 1774

who changed his name into:     Marcus BERMANN

although Marcus used the name Marx BERMANN in Zell

Bermann Samuel born 1778

who changed his name into:     Bernard BERMANN

Liebmann Samuel  born  1784

who changed his name into:     Lazarus BERMANN,

Descendants of  Lazarus Bermann later moved to Trier ( see Bermann family in Trier)

Not on this list ( because she lived in Koblenz at that time) is:

Judith Bermann born 1773

Judith married Rabbi Emanuel DEUTZ. (See Chapter: DEUTZ )

Marcus or Marx Bermann was in 1808 married to Hebe Johl, she changed her name into Claire Falck, but even at the wedding of her daughter in 1823 she is named Hebe Johl in official documents.

The children of Marx and Hebe, that were born in Oberwesel also had to change their names.

Jüdge Marx

Her name chanced into:          Eva BERMANN

Altough Eva used her old name in Zell. Later she used Judith

Bermann Samuel

His name chanced into:           Samuel BERMANN

Beule Marx  born 1803

Her name chanced into:          Claudine BERMANN

 ??? Marx born 1806

Her name chanced into:          Claire BERMANN

From Oberwesel to Zell / Merl

Around 1810, Marx, Hebe/Claire and their children left Oberwesel, and moved to Merl, which lies about 60 km. South-West of Oberwesel on the river Mosel.

In 1834 there were 30 Jewish people living in

Merl, the total number of inhabitants was around 1100.
The first time Jews where in Merl was documented in a tax list from       1663. In this list are the names of Wolf and David. In a document

from 1791 is written that Benjamin Amschel had converted to the        Catholic Church. He also changed his name to: Franz Ulmen.

In 1830 Marx Bermann was accused of illegal use of public roads. He    had a heap of manure, which was on public ground. Marx had to go to  court.

In Merl another child was born:   Jacob, born on April 20, 1811 at 02.00

We don’t know much about Jacobs family, in 1848 he negotiated together with some other members of the Jewish community with the city about purchasing a piece of land to build a Synagogue. On April 9, 1849 they signed the contract for the use of part of the castle to be used as Synagogue.

Jacob marries Emma Haas in 1838 and they shortly lived in Hottenbach. Emma’s parents are:

Aron Mordje Haas,

born November 15, 1792. Died October 15, 1835 and

Esther Jeanette Weiler, born 1793 in Steinbach, died October 18, 1878.

More about the family of Jacob BERMANN in:

The Bermanns from Koblenz

Claudine and Claire I could not find on the tax list from Merl in 1834 They must have married and moved to another town before 1834 or have died before 1834.

Samuel Bermann was married to Babetta Feist
In 1833 Samuel Bermann lived in Merl, about 1 km. from Zell

His brother Jacob was a merchant and is also on this list, he earned a bit more, his average was 29, 06 Talern.
In 1842 Samuel suit Christoph  Knodt from Trarbach because he still had a debt, after Samuel had  Christoph’s  house sold by court order.

This is the house from the Bermann family at the Balduinstraße 47 in Zell, during the war it was given the name Adolf Hitlerstraße. This picture was taken around 1938. The well is called ‘Schwartze Katz brunnen’ ( Black cat well) and this one dates from 1935. Before 1935 there was another well on this square.

Amalia Bermann

As I had found a lot of unknown members of the Bermann family, Ms. Marianne Bermann asked me if I could find her aunt Amalia Bermann. She  remembered that there was told, Amalia died while giving birth to her daughter.

After some research I found some information on Amalia Bermann.

Amalia Bermann was born in Zell on January 11, 1875. On September 5, 1906 ? she married Heinrich / Henri FEINER in Zell. Heinrich / Henri was born in Esch sur Alzette, Luxembourg.

In  1908 they lived in Arlon, Belgium. As we can see on the birth certificate of their son Camille FEINER. As profession Heinrich has written: baker.

On March 9, 1909 their daughter Alice was born.

On April 7, 1912, Alice dies in Arlon, the story of that she died while giving birth is unlikely, I could not find any documents to proof this.

Camile FEINER married Regina LANDERER, he went to the place his father was born, Esch sur Alzette were his son Henri and his daughter Alice Fanny were born. Henri lives in America. According to my information Regina died November 1983 in Esch sur Alzette.

Amelie Fanny married Steven KALMAR

                                                                                                                Camielle Feiner

Feist Ferdinand Bermann

            June 26, 1836 - March 2, 1890

Feist Ferdinand Bermann was born on June 26, 1836 in Zell at 8.00 p.m.

He was married to Sara Weil from Merzig, they lived in Zell where Ferdinand was a merchant. They had 4 children:

Adolf,       born on June 7, 1877 in Zell.

The Civil record administration in Mainz did not want to give out any information. They claim they are not allowed to do that, other than to persons who are descendents in first line.

The website: http://www.denkmalprojekt.org/Verlustlisten/rjf_orte_m_wk1.htm

tells us that Adolf died in the First World War and was declared dead by court on Oktober 6, 1915. Adolf was in division 12.I.R.88.

The archive from Mainz gave me some information:

At the time he died, Adolf lived in Mainz. He was registrated as a merchant, and lived, according to the Adressbooks of Mainz from 1907 till 1915,  at Ertalstrasse 4 and 17.

There is no registration in the ‘Family register’ also there is no death certificate.

In 1916 there was no one with the surname Bermann living at that address. They where sure that there was no widow of Adolf living at that address. Therefore I assume that Adolf was not married. Why would a married merchant join the army ?

Theodor,      born in 1897 in Zell, died at age two on December 25, 1881

Louis,           born in January 1897, died on March 1, 1897

Karl,             born on February 7, 1880 in Zell, died September 5, 1942 in the Getto of Lodz

Karl was married to Katinka Levi who was Meta Levi sister ( Meta Levi married Bruno Bermann. (See the Levi family tree)

Jewish Cemetery in Bullay

Jews in Bullay where for the first time mentioned in a document from 1754. Although there where not a lot of Jewish inhabitants, Bullay had a Jewish cemetery

This cemetery was used by the town’s Alf, Bad Bertrich, Blankenrath, Bremm, Briedel, Bullay, Merl, Pünderich and Zell.

At the end of the town, in the direction towards the town Neef, was the ‘Old’ Jewish cemetery. But there is no trace left of this cemetery.

The ‘new’ cemetery was founded around 1800, and today the oldest gravestone which is left is from Ms. Sondheimer who died in 1831. The cemetery lies high above the town on the hill, and is hard to find.

On August 8, 1940 the farmer Peter Brück bought a piece of the cemetery.

According to the ‘Verordnüng über den Einsatz jüdische Vermögens’ (Regulation for the use of Jewish assets), the cemetery was declared as ‘agricultural land’. Therefore it could be sold for 200 Reichsmark.

The same happened with the Synagogue in Zell.

Until this day, the Jewish community has not been compensated for this!

Louise Bermann

June 6, 1878- 1945

Louise Bermann was born on June 6, 1878 in Zell.

Louise married Eugen Frank from Hanau. In 1908 Louise and Frank had a baby, Mathilde, also known as Tilly.

Eugen Frank died May 7, 1918 in France, during the First World War.

This memorial was placed around 1920 in the Synagogue from Zell. This memorial was ordered by Max Bender, and was made by Mr. Wendhut from Traben-Trarbach. As the memorial was ready, Max Bender was shocked, as part of this memorial stone, a metal helmet was placed on top. As convinced pacifist, Max Bender convinced the maker to turn the helmet into a mourning mother. This resulted in the stone, which is still hanging in the Synagogue in Zell.

                    Here we see Tilly (Mathilde)
standing before the famous                      well ‘Zum schwartzen Katz’

Here we see on the left the restaurant from the Bermann family.
Living close to the river has certainly advantages, but not always.
This picture was made in 1932.

Here we see Tilly Frank, standing in the door of their house at the Balduinstraße. This picture was made in the summer of 1926.

Mathilde married Max Levie from Bausendorf, together they got 2 children.

Hilde Levie

Max Levie

The widow Louise Frank-Bermann, lived with her unmarried sister Jenny in the Balduinstraße 49, where her parents already had a restaurant and a butcher shop.

In May 1935 there was an article in the Jewish newspaper “Israelitisches Familienblatt’

‘Zell, about 4 kilometres from Bullay, 2700 inhabitants and about 30 Jews, together with Bullay, Alf Merl and Pünderich about 70 Jewish people. Zell is an old municipality, in 1346 there is written about a Jew that bought a house. In 1349 there was a pursuit against Jews. The present Jewish community exist since about. 1800. The old Synagogue is made into a youth hostel. The new Synagogue is very worthy, and services on every Sabbath. In Zell are 2 ritual restaurants: Gasthof Adler and Ms. Louise Frank, owner family Michael Bermann (previous reservation desired)

Babetta Adler

June 10, 1841- August 28, 1893

Babetta Adler was born in Hänstetten as Belche Adler, we know something about her family (with thanks to Mr. Peter Wyant)

1.4.1.4   Bernhard ISAAC (1794 - 1857)

Bernhard ISAAC was a younger son of Isaac GUMBRICH and his wife Sübchen MOSES.

Bernhard (who is also found as Bernard and Bernhardt, and as ISAAK and GUMBRICH) was b. 3 Jan/1794 at Hahnstätten, and was a trader ("Händler"). Along with his brother Jacob and other members of his family, his surname became [Anselm?] ADLER when it was required to be changed in 1841.

On 23 Jun/1830, he married for the first time at Hahnstätten. His bride was Beile LÖB/LOEB/SAMUEL, b. 6 Mar/1802, from Schierstein, some 30 km. to the southeast, on the northern bank of the Rhein just southwest of Wiesbaden, the daughter of Samuel LÖB from Schierstein and Bine HEIMANN. Bernhard and Beile had at least two children, both b. at Hahnstätten:

1.    Isaac BERNHARDT, b. 16 Mar/1831;

 Isaac, who later choose the surname ADLER and is also found with the patronymic BERNHARD, was a Sattler (“saddle maker"), and was likely named for his paternal grandfather. He died, unmarried, at Hahnstätten on 6 Nov/1853, aged 22 years;

2.    Süsschen BERNHARDT, b. 18 Dec/1832;

Süsschen/Süßchen, who also later assumed the surname ADLER and is also found with the patronymic BERNHARD, mar. Hirsch ROSENTHAL (b. 6 Sep/1835 at Herold, the son of Jacob ROSENTHAL of Herold and Karoline HAYUM) in November, 1863; this couple had at least one child:

    a.
Jacob ROSENTHAL, b. 13 Aug/1864 at Hahnstätten, d. 5 Dec/1864 at Hahnstätten.

Hirsch, a Handelsmann, d. within a year, on 8 Sep/1865, at Hahnstätten; Süsschen’s d. is unknown.

Beile d. on 7 Dec/1833 at Hahnstätten, possibly in childbirth, and Bernhard, faced with raising a son almost three years old, promptly remarried.

His second wife was Caroli/Karoline HEYMANN, b. 12 Dec/1803, from Schlangenbad, 24 km. south of Hahnstätten, on the Walluf; the daughter of Heymann LÖW/LÖWE from Schlangenbad and Margarethe ISAAC. They were married at Hahnstätten on 4 or 17 Jun/1834, and proceeded to have at least three children, all b. at Hahnstätten:

3.    Madgen BERNHARDT, b. 12 Aug/1835;

       Madgen, who later assumed the surname ADLER, is also found with the patronymic BERNHARD;

4.    Heium BERNHARD/BARNHARDT, b. 15 Apr/1838, d. 3 Jun/1839 at Hahnstätten;

5.    Gumbrich BERNHARDT, b. 13 Jul/1839;

Gumbrich, who also later assumed the surname ADLER, is also found with the patronymic BERNHARD.

Caroli d. at Hahnstätten on 5 Aug/1839, probably from childbirth complications with Gumbrich, and now Bernhard, with perhaps four young children (Isaac, 8, Süsschen, 7, Madgen, 4, and Gumbrich, newborn ... Heium, 14 months, had just d.) married a third time.

His last wife was Sara LILIENFELD, b. 9 Sep/1811 at Camberg, 14 km. to the east of Hahnstätten, on the Emsbach. Sara's parents were Mendel LILIENFELD of Camberg and Bettchen FEIST. They were married on 16 Jul/1840 (the place is unknown) and went on to have at least two children, both b. at Hahnstätten:

6.    Belitze/Berlitze/Belche ADLER, b. 10 Jun/1841;

7.    Mendel ADLER, b. 22 Feb/1846; Mendel was likely named for his maternal grandfather.

After the Hahnstätten/Oberneisen/Kaltenholzhausen synagogue association was established in 1841 (see section 1.4.1), its services and other functions were held in two rooms on the second floor of what was at the time Bernhard's own home at (later) Dahlstraße 1, until 30 Jul/1936 when the two rooms were sold to the then owner of the rest of the house, Karl DÖRNER. At the time, the purchase and sale agreement among Herr DÖRNER, the last leader of the community, Louis STRAUß, and the Districktrabbiner, Dr. LAUPHEIMER, acknowledged that the Jewish Gemeinde had possessed the synagogue for "long before 1900".

Bernhard was also the Gemeinde's cantor for a period of time and earned 21 Gulden annually for that activity.
Bernhard d. 12 May or Aug/1857 at Hahnstätten aged 63. His third wife, Sara, outlived him by almost 11 years, dying at Hahnstätten on 27 January or Feb/1868.

The later lives of the four? children that survived them are so far unknown.

On October 4, 1919. He went to the civil records office to get an  ‘Aufenthaltschein’ (permission to stay) This document tells us that he was already in Buttenhausen since May 1919.

On the ‘Meldekarte’  (registration card) from Frankfurt am Main, we can see that he lived in the Gaußstraße 29 third floor. Bruno and  Hermine lived in the Gaußstraße until they moved on January 5, 1920. They stayed only 2 months in this house on the Güntersburger Allee 32, they moved again, now to the Kez(?)einb.Allee 32, where they lived until 1923. On March 7, 1922 Bruno and Hermine’s daughter Marianne was born.  In 1923 the family moved to their new house at the Mainluststraße 2.

On December 12, 1923 the family moved in to their house in the Mainluststraße. We know from the archives of the tax office that Bruno Bermann trade in shoes from 1929 till 1933.

In 1934 the family moved again, now to the Staufenstraße

According to Marianne Bermann her father had a shop in paper products, in the Staufenstraße, the archives where this information should be kept, are destroyed during the war.

In old phonebooks from Frankfurth we can find Bruno Bermann.

Here with Nathan Rosenthal, a relative of Bruno. They sold shoes at Heiligkreuzgasse 33.

Here they live at Mainlustrasse, were the family live from 1923 to 1934.

In 1939 Bruno Bermann was deported to Concentration Camp Buchenwald, where he was imprisoned for 6 weeks. The reason he got out of the camp was that he had to sell the house of his family in Zell to the Community of Zell.

This letter from Camp Buchenwald tells us that Bruno was taken in prison ion November 13, 1938 Also known as 'Kristallnacht'  His prison number was  30004. On December 8, 1938 Bruno was released from this Camp.

Here is a copy of a letter Bruno wrote to his family as he was in Londen.

Marianne Sabine Bermann

Marianne Sabine Bermann was born on March 7, 1922 in Frankfurt am Main. She went to school at the ‘Privates Lyzeum’ from Ms. R. Steimer at the Kronbergerstraße 43 in Frankfurt. Before 1904 the ‘ Lyzeum Steimer” was called 'Lyzeum Frielinghaus'. In 1934 Jews where banned from this school, and they renamed the school 'Dorotheenschule' until the closing in 1939.

As in 1934 the Jews where forbidden to visit schools, Marianne went to the school from Ms. Josephine Reiss.

Josephine Reiss was granted in 1915 to give only private lessons, but it was forbidden to call that a school. Since 1939 she was only allowed to give lessons to Jews. This ‘school’ was on the 2 upper floors from the Synagogue at the Freiherr von Steinstraße. In 1942 the Germans forbid the Jews to go to any schools at all.

In 1939 the Bermann family escaped Germany, and fled to England, in Southampton they departed,  and shipped to America on the Hamburg.

On the passenger list we find their names

In early August 1923 one pound of meat stood at 180,000 marks, a four-pound loaf of bread at 90,000, a litre of beer at 30,000; one egg cost more or less 15,000 marks. And one U.S. dollar brought 7,000,000 marks. In Winterhausen near Würzburg 60-year-old Johann Hofmann recorded in his diary in stunned disbelief how it was "almost indescribable how much everything cost." A pound of butter: 20,000 marks. A cow: 20,000,000 marks. A six-pound loaf of bread: 4,800 marks. One month later that loaf cost 135,000 marks, in early September, 450,000. In early October it was 3,500,000 marks, and in mid-November a mind-boggling 220,000,000,000 marks—or just about 5 cents because on November 15 one U.S. dollar was worth 4,200,000,000,000, that is 4.2 trillion marks.

It was so bad, that workers get paid daily during lunch breaks. They had to buy food directly afterwards, because the prices would go up during the day.

Company’s printed their own money, and the State used existing money and printed the value in red ink over the ‘old’ value.

As in May 1923 they made some new money

In July 1923 they didn’t even bother how it looked, and printed only on one side.

Even company’s printed their own money.

As we see here,  money from the company Bruno Bermann worked  for.

And if you wanted to post a letter, a stamp did

cost 20.000.000.000 Mark

From ( I think it was Ms. Jaap) I got the next information. It is the passengerslist from November 9, 1922. On this list appears a Bruno BERMANN as a member of crew.

At first I thought that this could not be ‘our’ Bruno Bermann, but maybe he is.

Having read the story about the inflation, there is a possibility. Maybe Bruno was paid in US Dollars. Marianne Bermann was just born and maybe the could use the money. The boat to New York left on October 26, 1922 and arrived in New York on November 9, 1922. Assuming the boat did not stay in New York for long , Bruno could have been back the first week of December. I really think there is a fair chance the this is Marianne’s father.

They sailed,  first class passengers on board of the S.S. Mouzinho from Lisbon on August 20th, 1941. And arrived in the port of New York , 2 September 1941.

Egon Marcus

Egon Marcus was born in Berlin on January 15, 1910. He was the son of:

Georg Marcus, born April 22, 1879 in Flatow/ Zlotow ( Prussia) now Poland.
and

Johanna Turskinski  born, January 11, 1881 in Dirschau (Prussia)

Georg and Johanna had lived in Berlin on several addresses, first in the Marburgerstraße 12 W50, later at Odenbergerstraße 30.

At this address there where more members of the family living.

As we can see in the adressbook from Berlin 1935 they lived at the Hufelandstrasse 42.

We also see Julius Turczinski (Johanna’s brother) and his wife Gertrude Bernstein. Julius was born on October 25, 1882 in Dirschau (Prussia) and his wife Gertrude was born on May 28, 1886 in Vandsburg (Prussia)

Julius and Gertrude where deported to Riga in January 19, 1942.

Also in Berlin, lived the parents of Georg Marcus:

Max Marcus, born May 19, 1843 in Lobsens (Prussia) now Poland.
and his wife

Amalie Hirschbaum, born September 25, 1843 in Flatow (Prussia) now Poland.

I have tried to get documents from Poland, but without any result.

Max Marcus died on May 5, 1910 and was buried at Weissensee cemetery on May 8, 1910

His wife Amalia died on July 24, 1936 and was buried next to her husband May 27, 1936.

In 2006 There was not
much to see at
the place where
they where burried.
It is possible that
the headstone tipped
over, and lies under the
weeds.

In 2009 I went to Weissensee to visit the graves. And indeed under the weeds we found the stone. The gravestone had fallen from the base, but is in good order.

Copies of the papers from Weissensee cemetery , with the plot and row locations for Max MARCUS and Amalia HIRSCHBAUM

Copy of the address book from Berlin 1935

From the documents we know that at the time Max MARCUS died they lived at the Immanuelkirchstrasse no. 8.

The house still exist also, but the façade is ‘modernised’ in the East German way.

On the opposite site of the street an identical house is still in the original state.

Sometime after Max had died, Amalia moved to the Hufelandstrasse no. 42. In 1935 Amalia and her son Georg with his wife Johanna and children lived all there. This house also still remains, although also ‘modernised’

Imagine how often the Families Turskinsy and Marcus must have walked these stairs.

Judith Bermann

Judith BERMANN was born about 1801 in Oberwesel.

The

Bermann
family

from

Trier

In a book about the Jewish cemetery in Trier I found some graves with the surname BERMANN.

On this cemetery we find the graves of:

Julius BERMANN

Born: August 17, 1832 in Oberwesel ( named Isaak )

Died: January 24, 1925 in Trier

His Hebrew name was Isaak ben Elieser BERMANN

I had asked for his death certificate in Trier, but it does not name the parents. But on his birth certificate from Oberwesel are his parents written:

Lazarus BERMANN and Otillia STERN

Further are buried on this cemetery:

Rosa BERMANN nee WOLFSTHAL

    Born: March 4, 1935

    Died: October 29, 1901

    Wife of Mr. Isaak BERMANN

Ella BERMANN ( Edel bat Isaak)

    Born: February 18, 1862

    Died: October 29, 1904

On this grave it say’s ‘Fraulein” meaning that she was not married.

Bertha BERMANN

    Born: January 11, 1836

    Died: November 3, 1898

On this grave it also say’s ‘Fraulein” meaning that she also was not married.

On the internet I also found the name Gustav Bermann several times. A copy from his birth certificate that I got from Trier shows that his parents are Isaak Bermann and Rosa Wolfsthal.

Gustav was born on November 5, 1871 in Trier.

He studied law in Zurich (Switzerland), Berlin (Germany) and in Strasbourg (France).

Gustav was married to Herta Lewin. On the Yadvashem website I have found a ‘page of testimony’ donated by their daughter Eva who lived in New York. I have been in contact with Eva  and she wrote me:

Dear Bert,

Let me continue answering the questions of your November 18 letter and your Cobra e-mail of November 30.  My e-mail of last night ended by telling you some of the Bermann first names I was familiar with

My father Gustav and his wife Hertha met first during World War I in Brussels, where she was his

secretary in a German civilian bureau for the purchase of  .jute sacks or something similar.  They got married on October 2, 1919.

My sister Annelise was born April 9, 1920. in Berlin    I, the only other child, Eva, came along Sept. 1, 1922,  also in Berlin.    At the time we lived at Pariserstrasse 21 , Berlin-Wilmersdorf.. .

My father did have brothers and sisters:  Oskar, Willi, Ella (I thought it was 'Jenny', but maybe Jenny was Dad's twin sister who didn't live very long?)  I seem to recall that there was  another Jenny, but she was married to a man named MAHLER,  and  they lived in Frankfurt/Main in the thirties when I recall we visited them once.

In the early '30s, my father's income (he was a lawyer, Dr. jr.) had been decreasing under the Nazis so much that he (a) asked my mother Hertha to go back to work, and (b) started to get involved in smuggling money out for other Jews who wanted to have funds in the countries they hoped to emigrate to...strictly against the Nazi Devisengesetze.  In 1935 this whole thing blew up and he was warned not to come back to Germany from Luxemburg, where he was at the moment.  He didn't, but the Nazis came and arrested my mother instead  She had  a 'proper'  trial  and was sentenced to 2 years in prison,  at the end of which she came back to Berlin, sort of a free woman.

She arranged for me to join Dad in Luxemburg, for Annelise to continue her apprenticeship in photography at Joel & Heinzelmann, a fine photography studio where all our baby pictures had been taken.  Meanwhile, Mutti got busy getting herself a passport and a visa for Belgium, and in 1937 came to join Dad and me in Brussels, where we had moved to in the meantime, living in furnished rooms.  Annelise stayed in Berlin, with friends, and came over to Belgium when finished with her studies.    I finished my high school (and fashion design) studies in Belgium and got ready to become a fashion illustrator. ... That was in  the spring of 1940.  On May 10, 1940, the Nazis invaded Belgium (and also Holland and France.).  That was the end of fashion in those 3 countries, at least for abt. 5 years!

    Continuing this on December 13.

During the first year(s) of the German occupation, there wasn't much our family could do to earn money.  But Mutti and us girls crocheted fashion gloves for a woman who sold them.  Also,  my sister and I joined a small dance group  who entertained in Brussels' nightclubs; all it needed was flexibility for the few dances, and Anne and I had that.  At closure time, 3:a.m, we walked all the way home, about 1 hour uptown.  "Adventure" we called it; we were young then !  Since these night clubs were also frequented by German officers we decided after a few months that that was enough... too close to The Beast.  Then a friend of ours, a lawyer and German  Jew,  opened an office  in Brussels to represent Jewish business owners negotiating  Arianisierung -- usually with Christian friends of theirs who would give he businesses back to the original owners after the War.  He operated with tacit agreement by the German military administration.  While he was looking for a secretary, I offered to sit with the new office until he found one.  Turned out that with my intelligence and "hunt-and-peck" method of typing (two fingers) I was good enough, and he asked me to stay.

In 1942 the Nazis  got  hungry to arrest  moreJews, and one day Paps was picked up during a 'razzia' in a building where he was viisiting friends,  and while the friends were left unscathed (they had some kind of protection), my Dad was taken before we could even find out where they took such people and where to send a coat or whatever    Everything happened so fast that Paps was on his way to Auschwitz before we could act.!  I think that was about the time the Nazis had just  perfected the Zyklon gas , and the executions and cremations were stepped up tremendously  Paps was 71 at the time, often said he had had a full and happy life and was ready to go...but  that way???

This side of the BERMANN tree has to be researched more, but thanks to a researcher in Holland, I do have some information. Here is the familytree for the decendants of Lazarus BERMANN.

The

Bermann

family

from

Koblenz

Jacob Bermann was born in Merl on April 20, 1811. On March 27, 1838 he married Emma Haas from Hottenbach. We know that they had 7 children.

  1. Louis Bermann
  2. Florine Bermann
  3. Bermann
  4. Bermann
  5. Bermann
  6. Bermann
  7. Bermann

Joel Bermann’s Father Max Bermann had a drugstore in Koblenz, which had to be given up in the early years of the ‘Third Reich’. In 1937 he fled to Holland, ended up in a Camp, and returned to Koblenz, where he live shortly at the Markenbildchenweg. Than he fled to France, where he was interned in Camp Gurs until French friends got him out. He stayed there, but at a point he had to go to the authorities. In this time of despair he wrote a message:

My Fathers parents  lived in Zell on the Mosel, and moved very early, possibly in the 60s of the last Century to Koblenz, where my Grandfather with his sons where wine traders, and because  of their export to England, Holland and Belgium, they where important. At the beginning of the 70s (19th Century) my father managed their branch in England, where he stayed until his marriage. The Firm was managed by  4 persons, Father and 3 Sons. The parents of my Mother lived in Kippenheim. Also there they had a wholesale store in wine, later this moved to Hamburg and became the world-famous ‘Sociedad Vinicola Gebr. Durlacher’

In 1876 my parents, Louis Bermann and Babette Durlacher got married. My Fatehr was born in 1848and my Mother in 1853. They got 2 sons, my brother Sally was born in 1877 and me, Max born in 1878. My brother died very young at age 24 in 1901. We both studied at the  Gymnasium in Koblenz.  My brother Sally worked at a transport company, and I worked at a drugstore. In 1884, my Father and his brothers separated, and my Father managed his wine store until  1912, when he sold it to a wine wholesaler from Mainz. My Father sold mainly to Holland, Belgium and a part of Germany. My Brother worked in the firm after his training period, and worked there until he died. He traveled to Holland and Belgium, for my an opportunity to go to Japan was offered, but I had to reject because of sickness and the death of my brother. So I came into my Fathers firm, and visited clients in Germany until the firm was sold. Then I became a Salesman, and went trough the First World war 1915-1918. At the beginning of 1919 I started, together with an old friend with whom I did my training period, a wholesale firm  ‘ Bermann & Co Koblenz” The first firms in drugs, chemicals and bandages, world famous firm,  gave us their trust, and where clients. From 1927 I managed the firm on my own, because of my partners National Socialists thoughts,  we could not work together anymore.

In 1922 I got married to Lu Fröhlich Giessen. Our happy marriage gave us a Son, Lutz Sally was born in 1923. My Father Louis died in 1920,  my Mother Berbel  in 1926, my Mother-in-law in Gita Fröhlich in 1923, my Father-in-law Alfred Fröhlich in 1933. Our marriage did not last very long, in the end of 1934 Lu died.

In July 1935 young Lutz – the lucky boy- went to the noble men Hartogh in Haarlem (Holland). There had visited the ‘ Kennemer Lyceum’, and worked 1 year in the agricultures. In March 1938 he went with the youth Allija to Tel Chai (Palestine)  where he is now.

In July 1937, after I had lost my existence in Germany, I went to Holland, but after my ‘permission to stay’ was denied in 1938, I had to travel further and came to the south of  France, where I am with friends  at this moment until I, if God wants , have the possibility  to be together with my child. It is understandable that, after have written this, write down some happenings from which I think they are important to  pass on to my children.

When I first speak of my Mother, it is because this noble woman in her blessed life has taken an place of honor. She has made it her duty, after her oldest son died, to spend her energy in charity. She was chairman of the Jewish Woman society for over 25 years, was on her 70th birthday named Honoree chairman, and during the War (meaning the First World War) , decorated with the ‘Verdienstkreuz’ for her help during the War by Emperor Wilhelm, chairman of chewrah kadischah, she has lived a rich live, as a Jew with great conviction. Honored and respected by all who knew her.

My Father lived his live working and taking care of his family and firm. He was a respected member of the Jewish congregation in Koblenz, co-founder of the  ‘Eintracht loge U.O.B.B’.

My Mother-in-Law Gita Fröhlich did have the joy of attending the birth of her grandchild. She was a pious, charitable and wise woman. My Father-in-law Alfred  Fröhlich was co-founder of the ‘Seltzer Sprudels Augusta’ in Lönhberg (Lahn). Until mid 1933 he was chairman  of the Board of this firm, was member of the West-German coal syndicate, was chairman of the pious Jewish community in Giessen, and board member of various Jewish foundations, he was a law-abiding  Jew. He dies in 1933 after he had a heart attack, shortly after they had taken away his position as chairman at the firm he was co-founder of.

My Lu got sick in August 1933, shortly after she and Luts came back from Holiday from her Father. The fear of legitimacy, the canceling of orders at the firm confused her that much, that she  was hospitalized in a psychiatric institution from October 1933 till November 1934. On November 1st,  1934 she came home, physically weak,, but mentally very well. An operation she had at the end of November, went very well. A view days later she got some complications and she got peritonitis, from which she died on December 6. She was a clever respectable woman, filled with love for her Husband and children. Modest and a Spirit – that she spread not only on her Family -  she lived a short she lived it complete. Excepted to the Sister organizations of the ‘Loge U.O.B.B. ‘

My Firm Bermann & co, was representative in Drugs and Chemicals, companies as Julius Grossman from Hamburg, Lohmann AG from Fahr, Hans Schwarzkopf aus Berlin-Tempelhof, Gebr. Heitmann from Köln, Wybert from Tumringen,  Reichel from Berlin, Hohberger from Liepzig, Ackermann AG from Sontheim, Waldes & co from Dresden and other, all this companies trusted my firm. Whe where a leading company in this branche.

For years I have been chairman for the Jewish community in Koblenz, was member of the board of the the  ‘Eintracht loge U.O.B.B.’, chairman of the board at the local organization for sales-representatives in Germany, and decorated with the ‘ Frontkreutz’ of War participants.

May, after these years of separation,, it soon be possible to live together with my Sons, and my times of Placidity  and Peace come upon mankind.

                                                                       Max Bermann

Max Bermann did get to Israel, and did seen his son Joel Lutz Bermann.

Max Bermann died in Israel.

After Joel Lutz Bermann, born on February 14, 1923, at Easter 1935 from the Kaiser Wilhelm- Realgymnasium passed for ‘further education to Holland’ according to documents from the school. Joel was very lucky to be educated by Rabbi S.Ph. de Vries. Rabbi de Vries, was Rabbi in Haarlem for a long time, before he was killed in the spring of 1944 in Camp Bergen-Belsen.

Also the BERMANN family from Koblenz have to be researched more.

Judith Bermann

and

Rabbi

Emanuel Deutz

Judith Bermann was born in 1773 in Oberwesel, she married Menachem Manlin Emanuel Deutz ( born September 8, 1764 in Koblenz) and they lived in Koblenz.

We do not know much about Judith, but her husband and their children where/are well known.

Emanuel Deutz studied in Mainz, was rabbi of Koblenz, Member of the Assemblee des Notables. He was Chief Rabbi of the Central Consistory from 1810 to 1812, and after the departure of Abraham de Cologna, from 1826 until his death

The company of collectors of Haggadot is large and enthusiastic,     and the Library houses a collection worthy of their patronage. We cite a few of uncommon historic interest and a few which are not what they seem. The first Haggadah with a French translation was   published in 1818 in Metz. Its translator is David Drach, rabbi, doctor of law, a graduate of the Faculty of Letters of the Academy of Paris. He was also the son-in-law of Rabbi Emanuel Deutz, the Grand Rabbi of France. Four years later, Drach converted to Roman Catholicism and persuaded his brother-in-law, the Chief Rabbi's son, to do likewise. In his later years the latter returned to the Jewish faith but Drach remained loyal to and active in his new faith—translating, editing, and writing. Among his works are conversionary tracts and Hebrew poems in honour of the Pope and Cardinals. For obvious reasons not many copies of his translation of the Haggadah have survived.

Letter from Rabbi DEUTZ to Rabbi BERENSTEIN in Amsterdam 1835

MARX family
from Buttenhausen

The history of the MARX family has been researched by Werner MARX. Therefore I did not include this information again.

Letter from Abraham MARX written in 1797, he aplied to get  'Judenschutz'.

But there is some additional information about the MARX family.

The family tree on the page before shows us Salome or Salomit MARX, the daughter of Abraham MARX from Fellheim.

I found her trace in Gailingen near the border to Switzerland.

It is a bit difficult to read, but it say’s:

On April 29, 1823 where married by the Rabbi, in public:

the single

Seeligmann J. GUGGENHEIM

??? Son of ??  ‘Schutzjuden’ ( protected Jew)

Jozef GUGGENHEIM and Breindl WEIL

and the Single

Sulamit aus Buttenhausen

living in Gailingen.

Salome and Jozef had 7 children.

Here is a copy of the book from the civil records office from 1841, where we can find the birth of Samuel GUGGENHEIM.

Their son Marx died in 1832 when he was only 1 year. Fragments of his gravestone are still on the Jewish cemetery in Gailingen.

Here lies

Salome Marx died on Oktober 29, 1844 in Gailingen.

Fragments of her gravestone also can be found on the Jewish cemetery in Gailingen

After Salome died, Seeligmann Jozef Guggenheim married again on July 16, 1845 to Babetta Guggenheim from Worblingen

As we can see in the ‘Marriage book’ from Gailingen

If they had any more children is unknown to me.

Seeligmann Jozef GUGGENHEIM died on December 10, 1848.

His gravestone can be found at the Jewish cemetery in Gailingen.

Family connections in The Netherlands.

In the Netherlands we also find some of the descendants of the MARX family tree.

The first is Bertha MAYER Nee BERLINGER, daughter of Napthali BERLINGER, Rabbi and teacher at the school in Buttenhausen, and Hanna MARX.

Napthali Berlinger was put on

transport XIII/1-142 (23.08.1942 Stuttgart -> Terezín)

he died in Theresienstadt February 20, 1943, here is his death certificat.

Bertha was born in Buttenhausen September 26,  1909, she married Rabbi Chaim Hermann MAYER, born November 11, 1903 in Stuttgart. This marriage was on April 24, 1936 in Buttenhausen. The lived in Frankfurt some time and there, on March 27, 1937 their son Abraham Israel was born. On February 18, 1938, Bertha gave birth to Hanna Sara.

From the documents from the city of Amsterdam we see that they came to The Netherlands from Frankfurt on January 12, 1939. At first they lived in Rotterdam, were on May 18, 1940 daughter  their daughter Mirjam Soroh was born.  Then is stars to be a bit complicated, because according to the documents, the family lived in Amsterdam at the time Mirjam was born in Rotterdam. But maybe this has to do with Hermann working in various cities.

On March 14, 1940 they lived, according to the documents at Oostelijke Handelskade 12 in Amsterdam. In October 1940 they leave to live in Hilversum, were I know Hermann worked as Rabbi. On November 14, 1942 they suddenly turn up in Amsterdam again as they moved in to a house at Langehoutstraat 45/47. Than we see on the documents July 30, 1941 PB 200, this means they were send to  Camp Westerbork, they last entry is that they  ‘moved’ to Germany on July 12, 1943. The family was killed in Sobibor July 27, 1943,

Letter from Yehuda BERLINGER:

My great-grandfather. Rabbi and teacher in Buttenhausen, southern Germany, and for all children in a thirty mile radius thereof. Died in Theresienstadt in 1943.

As did most of his children and family and the entire town of Buttenhausen.

His son, Jacob, managed to get to England with my grandmother Martha, my father Eli, and aunt Hannah in June, 1939, by leaving almost everything. My aunt Hannah was born the day they were supposed to leave (April 1939), but they managed to get another chance. Jacob was interred as a P.O.W. in England for 2 years before being allowed to reach New York. My father was 2 when he came to England and 4 before he saw his father again. They would have gone to Palestine except that Palestine (read: the British) wouldn't let them in. The U.S. wouldn't have let them in either except that my great-aunt Grete was their "sponsor".

My aunt Hannah finally moved to Israel in 1976 along with her entire family. My brother David came in 1986, my brother Ben and I came in 1991. My father and mother came in 1995.

Request

from Levi Adler and
associates about the
closing of the
Synagogue in Hahn-
statten
                By decision of the
                Royal Government from

July 24, 1867 with registration number

23011, is decided that by the approved

                Authority  from the region Hahnstetten

                and the region Kirberg-Maushalten
the closing of the Synagogue in Hanstatten was desirable , when it is was without
any great problems for the local Jews by the Royal  officer.

To the

Royal Government

in

      Wiesbaden

                                  While the distance

                                  between  Hahnstätten and

Kirberg is about 1 ½ hours, while

    the Law on Sabbath and

    holy day’s only allows

    1 hour travelling.

    The closing of the Synagogue

    in Hahnstätten therefore even more

    undesirable, than that what the

    Royal Government held desirable.

To enervate any objection in advance,

are all  member of the community

willing to pay for furnishing and

salary of the teacher, together with

    the community of Kirberg-Sauborn

    and Mausfelden-Heringen.

    Besides that, to maintain

    the  Synagogue in Hahnstätten

    by our own funding.

With good reasons therefore we
want to ask the Royal
Government not to close
the Synagogue in Hahnstätten.

 Nr. 42

The mayor spoke

to the juror council

The Jew Marx Bermann, winegrower Michael Scheid and Anton Görgen

from Merl have thrown manure out of their stables

before their house, these piles grow higher and higher

By doing this, they not only pollute the street, right on the

place where there is pavement, and thereby forcing the pedestrians

to step into this manure.

They did not take care of cleanness, and that they did not carry away the manure, when they had time for it. The municipality did not take action,

and only ordered them to take away and clean the pavement on market day’s.

Complaints have been made about the rubbish and obstruction of the road, and made us summon the three persons to abandon, and clean those places.

As this had not been done, they have been fined by the police.

At the -court of justice on August 21 and

October 11, this year (1830) Bermann and Scheid

the judge, decided that they where not guilty,  because they did not claim ownership, the public prosecutor did not deny this, but declared that the complaints where only made about the rubbish on the street.

The verdict on Görgen was: guilty, because he claimed ownership.

The ? council has heard

Considering that, the municipality does not admit/may do this, that their property was taken.

Considering that Bermann and others, are not even owners of the places.

Considering that Bermann and others have not cleaned this places at time of the yearly marked.

Considering that, by not doing that, they will be fined by the town-council.

We summon,

that Marx Bermann, Michael Scheid from Zell,

and Anton Görgen from Merl, by Court order have to abandon these places.

Document from police officer DOLATE, concerning actions against Jews in Zell and Merl

Concerning:        Service of the principal agent Dolate regarding

the actions against the Jews on November 11, 1938

In the early morning from November 9, 1938 I was awakened by

Sergeant major Hiltrop and made aware of that during the day from the SA (Sturm Abteilung) an action against the Jews would take place. The Mayor of Zell, Jochem, told sergeant major Hiltrop,

had commissioned him, out of precaution, to take various ritual goods out of the Synagogue and store them at his office. To prevent this police action for any disturbance by the SA ( Sturm Abteilung), the Major thought it was required, that I was present and assisted  sergeant major Hiltrop. After I had got this order, I prepared myself and attended sergeant major Hiltrop to the Synagogue where already where present, two workmen and the master locksmith TREIS, who were ordered to transport the goods. After we had opened the Synagogue, we loaded several things, from which we thought where ‘ritual’ on a handcart, and brought them accompanied by sergeant major  HILTROP, to the Mayor’s office. I did, because there was no trouble, returned from the Synagogue to my house.

During the day it proves that what Mayor JOCHEM apprehended, was right. And that the by him ordered measurements, had prevented that the ritual goods later by the intruders had been stolen. What else has happened during this day, and where the police was not permitted to intervene, has upset every policeman.

Around 6 a.m. this day the action was cancelled. I was, asked to  give police protection by Ms. WOLFF from Merl who had phoned me, and I went to Merl. There I saw how schoolchildren where cause of this action, and had broken the windows of the two houses in Merl where Jewish families lived, and now where shouting and running on the street. I entered the house, and calmed down Ms. WOLFF, she was afraid of her live, but I told her that she did not had to fear for her live while I was there. I stayed long in Ms. WOLFF’s home, and I went home, as soon as everything outside was quiet and I was sure that this action had ended. As I came in Zell, I was told by my wife, that the sisters FRANK ( The officer means the widow Louise FRANK nee BERMANN and her sister Jenny ) who where now the only present Jews, and who would like to speak to my urgently. On my inspection trough Zell, just before dusk, I visited the two sisters who lived at the marked. I found them in fear, and they asked for my protection again and again. I guaranteed them that in Zell,  I would not let it happen that anyone would touch them even with a finger. Together with sergeant major Hiltrop we spend our time until 3 p.m. in the near area of the house of the sisters FRANK. Therefore nothing happened here, as it did by the Jews who lived in the village’s Merl, Alf and Bullay.

Other than the actions against the windows from the vicarage, and the one at the synagogue in Zell, nothing unlawfully happened this day.

After Minister SCHWARTZ gave notice, and declared that the broken windows where thrown in with a turnip.   I researched this case the next day, and found out that the pertrator had been the  and member of the ‘common’ SS.

I wanted to make charge against Schmidt, but Minister  Schwartz preferred to drop the charges if Schmidt would apologize personally, and pay for the damages, which he did.

In the above, I have, to my knowledge,  acted in respect and honour, on the day of action against the Jews.

In my profession I have tried to be  impartial, and have done my duty, without acceptance of persons or positions.

I have since I became a policeman in 1919, tried to use my education as servant of the people. I think I have done so, and have never gained any personal profit.
