At 16.05 hours on Friday December 8th 2006, María’s professional tennis career is over. It wasn’t the end she deserved. After just one game in her last match against Lourdes Dominguez at the Spanish Masters in Estepona María felt a horrible pain in her right ankle. After an injury stop in which her ankle was taped, she played the match out with tears in her eyes. She couldn’t move very well and needed a painkiller. Within one hour she ended her career with a 2-6 0-6 lost. Fortunately the RFET organised a great ceremony before the Masters final on Sunday.

Your webmaster wrote a little article for the Dutch tennis magazine Tennis Today. Although they changed the end a little and made a mistake about Dani (he is not the player from Portugal who played with Ajax), I hope you like it.

Adios María

After a tennis career of 15 years the Spanish tennis star María Sánchez Lorenzo puts away her professional rackets for good. The 29 years old player from Salamanca won one WTA title, that was in Knokke-Heist, Belgium in 1999 and in 1995 she was member of the winning Spanish Fed-Cup team.  In 2003 she got Spanish Champion and with her club RTC Barcelona 1899 she was three times the best. In the Netherlands, María became known in 2003 as club champion with TC Groenekan. Place 33 was her highest ranking in a career that was troubled by back injuries and skin problems at her hands.  Even during her last match, a (foot) injury causes her so much pain, it didn't become the celebration that this sympathetic tennis star deserved.  Perhaps she will ever play in a club competition again, but she also has other hobbies (baseball). Her great love is the well know football player Dani. You can follow her on www.vamos-maria.com.
