Alles is mogelijk.

Twins why different and the same?.

Hans van Rossum, february 2013.

Why can twins be so similar in horoscope design while at the same time they may act different, one being more agressive, the other slow in acting, one introvert, the other more extrovert? I think that as twins have almost the same horoscopes with small differencs for ascendant and MC and houses ans so share almost all the aspects together, and therefore have very similar dynamics together, one may assume that one of the twins may live out one end of an aspect as strongest and the other may live out the other end of the aspect as strongest. This should already happen in the very beginning, inside mother, as they have to share but also devide the available space. As an example, let's say, they share a square mars - saturn dynamic. For about 9 months they have to share that dynamic, share that aspect, so while the aspect lives in both of them, one will express the mars side stronger and as a consequesce, to keep the balance intact, the other will express the saturnus side stronger. But both have the mars-saturn conflict, be it differently expressed. Another example: both have a sun - pluto opposition but one may express the pluto side stronger, is somewhat more secretive, while the other is more "keen" to express the sun-side, comes easier to selfexpression. But both have some misgivings about the outer world and both are inclined (one somewhat more, one somewhat less, to see the outer world as a fiend, as something not to be trusted. I have found, by looking at it this way, one can better see the (big) similarities and the (small) differences of twins.

Mundane Astrology.

Hans van Rossum, november 2011.

A special form of Astrology is Mundane Astrology, which tries to explain and also forecast world events like wars, depressions and changes in social mood. A person may have transits that make him or her optimistic and daring, pessimistic and afraid, or lacking patience and longing for change, romantic or spiritual, etc and so may the world in total or parts of the world that are especially affected by the ongoing transits. To see world events and moods we can take daily transits, which means transits to transit or what we might all daily aspects. Also here, as in personal horoscopes, the slow moving planets show longer trends, made even longer by retrograde repeats, while the faster planets show aspects of shorter effect or triggers for longer aspects to gain force. However, signs a faster planet is in have their influence too, as even the fast moving sun is about 30 days in the same sign. As the daily aspects show no houses, the characteristics of the planets are even more important to show fields of influence. What is extremely important in Mundane astrology is a thorough knowledge of history to enable one to compare the present with what happened in the past, as is the case right now with the financial crisis and recognizing the similarities and differences with the 1930's, when saturn, pluto and uranus made similar aspects together as they do from 2008-2012/15. It is good to recognize, that what one may call social moods can be seen from the positions of the planets and that these social moods in turn cause changes in behavior and therefore changes in social, scientific and financial circumstances and customs. A general feeling of fear for instance, may lead to less spending overall and so to economic standstill, but that fear will also lead to more polarity and less trust and consensus in the world and in extreme cases to war. A general atmosphere of optimism on the other hand may lead to (economic) expansion, to great undertakings good for mankind. Therefore mundane astrology is extremely useful, as we can see what is ahead long before. And, I can assure you, often it is even more fun, more interesting than just sticking to personal horoscopes, as one is trying to better understand the total movements in the world, the sum of all personal horoscopes.

Astrological advice - for what purpose.

Hans van Rossum, april 2010.

A few days ago I talked with someone about the usefulness of having a discussion with a good astrologer in view of certain problems the person had met in his life. Problems that were clearly shown in the birth horoscope (I could see that because I knew day and time of birth) and which were still troubling him now. The person replied that he did not want such discussion, as he did not want to know what was going to happen in his personal future and rather live without that knowledge. He did not understand, as he was no astrologer himself, that forecasting the future is only one part of astrology, important enough if one wants to know, but that discussing a personal birth horoscope is quite another thing, which in his case he did need. Discussing the birth horoscope means discussing together the characteristics of a person as given to him at birth; you could say his personal software. This serves to get to know yourself better, to see and understand why certain things are happening to you over and over again; to understand why you make people react to you in a certain way and what you can do to get different reactions. And -very useful and important - to see and understand what are the tools you have gotten at birth and how to use them as efficiently to your own advantage as possible. This is shown mostly by what we call aspects; the way various planets (or you could say sub personalities) are connected and will work together spontaneously or will have to learn how to work together. Some planets or sub personalities even may work against each other, will hinder each other and so will not work to your advantage, unless you know and so can help the process. You could say, that the astrologer can tell you what tools you have and how best to use them together, which will greatly improve your way of living, your achievements, how to reach your goals. You might think that you know your tools already and know whether and how they support or hinder each other. But no, unfortunately, knowing one-self is one of the most difficult things in life, far more difficult than judging others.
And that is exactly where a good astrologer can give you help, can explain to you with what tools you were born and how to use them to your best interest.

The financial crisis of 2008 - ??.

Hans van Rossum, october 2008.

Could astrologers have forecasted the present financial crisis? Surely; Barrault did this long ago and after that at least one more astrologer has done so: Raymond Merryman. In spite of his name, he made this gloomy forecast already in 1998, based on the figuration in heaven to come of Saturn, Uranus and Pluto. There are astrologers, that look at all kind of minor transits, but in my opinion one has to look at major transits of the slower planets for important, long lasting trends, while the transits of faster planets may help for pinpointing more exact timing. On November 4th there will be the first exact hit of the opposition (180 degrees) of Saturn and Uranus. Dates of the other 4 hits are: 5th february 2009, 15th september 2009, 25th april 2010 and 26th july 2010. That opposition has always been important; after all it is a confrontation of the planet of pragmatism, tradition, rules and accountability and the planet of the new, unforeseen, unexpected, of impatience. 2 planets of colossal power will fight it out and may finally come to some sort of understanding; the outcome is uncertain, but one thing is certain anyway: things will change; the world will change. No fields of life will remain untouched. While these oppositions last - until a while after the last time it has been exact - there will be a lot of unrest. In addition to this opposition, which is sufficiently powerful by itself, there will be the planet pluto, the planet of change, transformation, of dying and rebirth. Pluto is going to form a square (90 degrees) to both Saturn (2009-2011) and Uranus (2012-2015). So we have 3 powerhouses in stressful contact with each other. And in addition Pluto, which for years has been in Sagittarius, the sign of expansion and no controls at all, is entering Capricorn, the sign of contraption and of controls, controls, controls. We may see similarities with 1929/1930, when pluto was involved as well in forming a so called t-square with those planets in opposition, such as the breaking down of the financial system, but obviously there will be unknown differences too and the outcome will be something new, something not yet experienced before. Religious people may say that God is punishing us for our greed, waste and for not caring about that part of the world population that is famishing. I don't believe in a god (if he existed, why would he have made the human race the masters of the world) but could understand a universe around us wanting to teach us a lesson, even though most lessons are easily forgotten anyway.

So yes,we could forecast the crisis, we might forecast the kind of problems that might turn up, but we cannot forecast the outcome. It is to be regretted that we need a situation full of panic to take notice and that we need force to change. A good thing for the earth and in the end also for our children is, that a recession may force us to count our money and expenses again, to turn our back to waste and become more sober and responsible, to look for durable energy such as sun and wind energy, which in fact are already competitive but strongly opposed by the oil companies, and to reflect on what all wireless currents may do to the health and fertility of our children.

How pluto transits feel.

by Hans van Rossum, august 2008.

While in astronomy there are opposing groups with opposing opinions about what to call Pluto, whether to call it a planet or not, for astrologers the influence of pluto on things that happen to life on earth and to us personally is as clear as ever. I have seen it time and again, how pluto transits affect the lives of clients, of family members, of myself. Right now I have pluto transiting opposite my MC - so also conjunct my cusp 4 - and square my ascendant and I can tell you, it is heavy stuff. The best description I have seen of the nature of pluto transits is by Ray Merriman, which can be found on his website in an article about Pluto in Capricorn and which he allowed me to quote from. I think this description applies to all pluto transits, not just to the pluto transit in Capricorn:
"You want to know what Pluto in Capricorn is all about? It is something that I am quite intimate with. I may be the very embodiment of Pluto’s spirit to transform physically and psychologically, as it prepares to move over my own natal Sun. Mars, and Moon. I feel it, I know it, I am in awe of it, and I am humbled by the vastness of its force, which I am just beginning to comprehend. I try to convince myself that I welcome it, that I will embrace it and work in harmony with it. But whenever I try to program this positive affirmation into my conscious mind, something even deeper within me is laughing. In fact, I realize that it is not even within me, but more like another consciousness in a dimension that surrounds me – one that is connected to me but not really the “me” as I know myself. And it conveys this idea that: ""Ray… you don’t really have a clue at all. You think you have a choice. You want to believe you have a choice and that your choices will make a difference. The only choice you have to is to choose the inevitable. And that choice I – Pluto – have already made for you. You think you can control your thoughts and program the form in which I will manifest in your life, and thereby you can make yourself “joyful” over my arrival. But you cannot. And so therefore the primary “joy” that awaits you, related to me, is the process of discovery – the discovery of that which involves not just your own true self, but also of humanity and the realization of your connection to it."" And so goes my conversation with Pluto, as he enters Capricorn and starts his conjunction to not only my own natal Sun, but also the Winter Solstice point of Humankind at 0 degrees of Capricorn."
So far Ray. And these are exactly the feelings I experience with my own pluto transits! I try to decide; but do I have a choice or has the decision been taken out of my hands? Because that's how it feels.

Sexuality and astrology, a neglected subject?

by Hans van Rossum, october 2006.

First of all, I like to mention that in modern astrological consults sexuality is a rather neglected subject, in spite of the fact, that modern consults are stressing so many psychological factors. Why is this? Do our clients have no sexual problems? Are sexual problems not connected with psychology? Or with astrology? I don't believe so. Do a number of astrologers have problems discussing sex? I think that is the case. Regretfully so, as not only in their personal life, but also in their relationships, our clients often experience blockades in this field that really should be studied and discussed. The question also is whether, even if the astrologer is free from taboos regarding his personal sex life, whether most women astrologers can understand their men clients and whether most men astrologers can understand their women clients in this field.
In this article I like to stick to general "rules" that probably apply in a great number of cases.; To see how to deal best with them will be shown first of all by the personal horoscopes, by mars and venus, saturn, sun and moon.
Obviously father and mother issues play their role, even if the relationships with father and/or mother have been reasonably good. When men look at a female partner, the image they have of their mother often plays a profound role. Likewise, when females look at a male partner, the image they have of their father comes into play. However, the influence of mothers on men often is stronger and more difficult, as they have experienced growing in the body of a person of the same sex as their partner, of having been totally dependent on that person for food, for staying alive.
Whether or not the female or male partner has similarities in character with the mother or father, there always is a tendency for the man to see his female partner not only as partner and mistress but in a way also as a mother figure and so as a most powerful figure, as some-one, whose approval is important, as was the case with the mother. And the same is, in a different way, the case with women and their partners.
This usually is not the case in the beginning of a relationship, where both partners are keen to please the other and are less inhibited, are living their sex life in the 5th house of the horoscope, the house also of creativity and experiment, but this will gradually creep in when relationships last longer, when the relationship moves from the 5th house into the 7th house, from the house of play, of taking risks, of courage and self-expression into the house of the other, the house where others are stronger than you. Or differently said: the house where you may meet planets that you have not yet made your own, where you are unsure of yourself. What does this mean? In a way the male or female partner is thrown back to being a small boy or girl that has to do what mother or father wants, to get their approval, and, not less important, is not allowed to do what mother or father do not want, so he/she has to find his way, has to do things without displeasing her or him, without making her or him angry. In other words, as a relationship lasts longer, the man or female tries to do what the mother or father, the partner wants, rather than what he or she wants. While during the period of the 5th house he or she could be selfish and rather uninhabitantly look (ask) for what he/she wanted, in the 7th house one now has to please not him/herself, but the partner. And this change of house often is especially apparent in the intimacy of sex, where the subconscious plays such a big role.
There may even be a feeling of something forbidden, of some kind of incest, if the parent has been a very powerful influence. Many people therefore, when having sex with their partners are not at all as sure of themselves as it appears, as their partners think. They may need approval, a show of satisfaction from their partners or even applause. If the partner does not react positively to their sexual approach, to new things, they may easily fall back into a routine. A routine where both partners may lose something, some excitement, the will to experiment. There are many other or additional possibilities, often shown clearly in the horoscope, about the relationship with the parent, such as aggression or idealization, if the relationship with the parent has been of that kind. For instance, as boys may become angry with their mothers, disobey, are getting frustrated, even violent, so they may act with their partner. I have had many women clients that did not understand their partner's insecurity or frustration. After knowing more about their partner’s dependence on his mother (whether love or hate) these women became better able to handle the sexual side of the relationship. As far as women is concerned, while the father figure plays a somewhat similar role to the mother with men, that role often may be much less influential as fathers are apt to being absent far more than the mother. Women see the partner as well as partner, father and quite often also as son rather than as partner only. A lot depends on the relationship with the father - was he withdrawn, aggressive, drunk, always fishing for compliments etc., getting angry when contradicted? Women may also have that insecurity not to perform well, not to please the partner’, especially when they do not experience orgasm; they may see this as a failure to respond rather then as a failure of the partner to arouse them , while that may in effect be the prime cause in many cases.
Fortunately, in spite of modern developments, men and women still are quite different. And obviously, women see sex differently from men: as a token of love or submission where time is needed as well as love, so there also is a difference in approach and timing, in preparation.
Apart from client’s horoscope, one may look at the astrological synastry as well, as some relationships just are difficult all over, but as with most things of life, it is important that the clients see their own role, their own influence in what is happening to them.
Taboos have to be broken, first of all by the astrologer himself in his own life and then when discussing the subject with his or her clients, and thereafter in trying to break the client's taboos. The client will have to understand him/herself and the partner, has to learn to be more courageous with his/her partner in experimenting/fantasizing with his/her own body and then to have the courage discussing what he/she may like and wants to do with the partner, without fear of being rejected and at the same time to be open for suggestions and wishes from the other.
To try to have open discussions with the partner about sex, which brings us to the 8th house of the horoscope, the house of hidden complexes, of sharing one's darker side, of sharing money. This for some can be easy and most difficult for others. If there are difficulties in the 8th house, partners have to try hard consciously to be open with each other, as otherwise, in the 8th house old suppressed fears may continue to interfere.
But most important, the astrologers has to know how to communicate what he sees in the horoscopes about sex, about the changes in sex life when moving from the 5th into the 7th and 8th houses of the partners and possibly have to stress to the clients that when moving into the field of another house they should try to take with them the good things, the playful atmosphere of the 5th house they left.

How much can an astrologer do for clients?

by Hans van Rossum, august 2006.

Usually when one starts with one's first astrology lessons, one is impressed by what the teacher can do with astrology: he gives you an outline of your character as well as of events in the past and present, that is really astounding. And you hear him doing the same with other members of the class. By and by one learns more and a time comes when one obtains certification as an astrologer and starts on one's own. At first hesitantly, sometimes checking with the teacher, whether one is on the right track, but gradually with more self confidence as one's deductions prove right more and more often. One even may get the idea, that astrology is the right medicine for all, that if only people talk with a good astrologer (and one assumes that one is a good one oneself), they can change for the better, use their talents to the full, have better relationships and can meet the future better prepared; in short: lead better and happier lives. One of my clients said to me: I have learned more from you in one session than from a long period of talks with my psychiatrist. That is very flattering, but is it true? Certainly he had heard a lot about his character, about how he made the various parts of his character work together or against one another, and about how he influenced peoples reactions to him, but did it make him change the things he was not satisfied with? Was he in fact not satisfied with parts of himself; did he want to change? To change is not all that easy and certainly it's often a slow process. Obviously, in our astrology lessons we had to learn how to talk with clients and above all: how to listen to them, how to make the meeting a dialoque. Actually that is something one gradually learns in practice. Still, one often helps clients more then appears at first sight. Off course, there are helpful circumstances: people generally don't make appointments for fun; they come, because they have the wish to better fulfill themselves. Or they have one or more problems and want help, so basically they are prepared to listen, open to learn. Also they recognize characteristics you mention to them and see, that from looking at their horoscope you know quite a lot about them, which is prove that astrology works. While I think, that it certainly is difficult for people to change their basis characteristics, it certainly is possible for them to make more of those characteristics, make them work together in a better way. But we astrologers don't have a magic stone, amulet, to make them change, or, what some people rather would, change their partners, bosses, children! They may get the tools from the astrologer, but we don't give them an amulet; they have to do some work themselves, reflect on what they have heard and do something with it; they have to look consciously at themselves and their acts, recognize their automatic patterns. So can we help people to change? Yes and no; we can give them a lot of knowledge about themselves and the processes that go on inside them and tools to improve and then, if they want, they can work with it and see results.

The USA presidential elections november 2004 and inauguration january 2005.

by Hans van Rossum, march 2004.

I have tried to come to a conclusion regarding the coming USA elections and whether GW Bush will be reelected.
I tried to do this without letting my feelings about Bush play a role. Also I have not asked myself the question whether he is still alive at that time or who will be running against him.

My starting point, which may be disagreed upon by others, is the conviction, that in the life of a politician the result of an election/inauguration for USA president is such a major event, that it also has to show in a major way and that therefore it is not necessary to look at too many factors. The event should stick out by major transits, as well as by major secondary directions, as well as by solar arc directions or by major declination transits, so one should logically get results by just using one's own favorite system. So in this case I use my favorite: major transits. It also, in my opinion, is not absolutely necessary to look at who is the other candidate.

My conclusion, based on the following transits is that Bush will not be reelected. I must admit that I attach more weight to the unfavorable saturn transits than to some good jupiter transits; I can well understand that others may draw quite different conclusions.

It may be interesting to point out what Grant Lewi had to say about persons trying to be (reelected) president while saturn is to go into the obscure segment of their chart: Not much chance to be elected, but if one is, one will certainly regret it.

Main transits of George W Bush around election/inauguration time:

transit pluto ruler 4th triangle venus ruler 4th and 10th, in 4th house: 26 january 2004, again 25 may 2004 again 25 november 2004.
This is a good series of trine transits for re-evaluating relationships and self worth but it is a transit of transformation, change, not necessarily of more of the same thing in society. Also, it is past just after election and before time of inauguration and venus is in the 4th house of self reflection and the home. One may force one's will upon relations and at home or change one's ideas of relating, but at the end of the pluto transits the pure use of power has failed, one has to start anew.

transit neptune ruler 9th triangle moon ruler 12th in 3rd house: 18 april 2004 again 16 june 2004 again 6 february 2005.
A good trine to bring up and solve the past, old "child" and "victim" problems, to become more involved with one's children, to become more "spiritual, emotional and caring", to "daydream" and to communicate one's daydreams and emotions, but this is not a trine where one is aggressively winning an election, the more so, as it also is a trine to the ruler of the 12th.

saturn conjunct sun 13june2004; saturn square moon 25june2004; saturn square cheiron 27june2004; saturn square jupiter 18july2004; jupiter square uranus 4august2004; jupiter square moon node 6august2004: These transits are long past by election time.

transit saturn ruler 6th square MC: 7 september 2004 again 11 january 2005 again 27 may 2005.
Certainly a very difficult transit for one's position in and relations with society. Often a time of dismissal of one's job and of trouble/conflicts between own rules and the rules of society and authority (in this case the USA population, voters); certainly not an aspect one may expect for reelection. One has (by force) to drop own rules/goals that apply no longer. Defending one's own rules may lead to one's self undoing in one's position in society.

transit saturn conjunct saturn, ruler of 6th in 12th house: 8 october 2004 again 8 december 2004 again 18 june 2005.
This is a period of reflection. One is forced to look at existing priorities and how to continue from now onwards. This can mean dropping old and accepting different and new responsibilities but not likely a successful reelection to the same job, unless one sincerely wants to approach that job with a different feeling of responsibility and a different attitude. In addition, natal saturn is in the 12th house, not a good transit therefore for reelection but rather for disappearing out of sight.

transit jupiter ruler 5th conjunct neptune ruler 9th: 23 october 2004.
A tremendous activity based on his own fantasies, believes or lies, but it does not promise "hard" business results and also is over before election.

transit mars square saturn ruler of 6th in 12th house: 6 november 2004.
Energy/aggression squares rules and responsibility. The energy works against the rules of others, is blocked and turns into aggression.

transit mars opposit MC: 9 november 2004.
Energy is more turned inside and works against (turns into aggression against) society and society works against (turns aggressive against) you.
transit jupiter ruler 5th square sun ruler 1st in 12th: 3 december 2004 again 6 april 2005 again 3 august 2005.
Overly optimistic actions and timing may spur but also hurt (be contra-effective) the road towards one's goal in life, one's selffullfilment. Not helpfull for reelection.
transit jupiter ruler 5th conjunct moon ruler 12th in 3rd: 13 december 2004 again 25 march 2005 again 13 august 2005.
This basically is a very good transit, exact after election but before inauguration, but more related to the moonside of his character than to the sunside. And his sunside is what counts in this election. Also, the moon is ruler of the 12th, so this transit may help more for some spiritual development and withdrawing from society than for being inaugurated a second time although its place in the 3rd gives a strong boost to communicating. It does not show the hurt feelings that should be there after having lost an election.

transit jupiter conjunct cheiron: 15 december 2004 again 23 march 2005 again 14 august 2005.
Old hurts healed? A good transit to heal old wounds, but will this transit, which becomes exact after the elections and before inauguration time help him? Maybe to heal wounds, but not to be inaugurated. Let me add that I am not an expert on cheiron.

transit jupiter conjunct jupiter ruler 5th and in 3rd house: 11 january 2005 23 february 2005.
Now this transit really is a good one; one would not expect it for someone having just watched the inauguration of somebody else into his previous job. Maybe a defeat (if there is the defeat) after all is a personal liberation, a start for development in another direction?? Or , after all, I have led my feelings against Bush trouble my judgement and he will be elected after all, but will not have a happy second term. He will have to account for his misjudgements and for bending the truth his way.

So hesitantly my prediction is: Firstly, Bush will not be reelected. And secondly: if for some reason he will be president beyond january 2005, he will have ample reason to regret the event.

Postscript november 10th 2004: Bush has just been re-elected, so what went wrong with my prediction? I guess I fell into the trap of not making an impartial judgement, but of letting my feelings about Bush (I didn't want him to be elected, I thoroughly dislike the man and think he has brought a lot of bad things to the United States and the World; I was hoping he would be beaten) influence that judgement. A lesson for any future predictions: take care to be neutral or don't predict!

Country Horoscopes - what date to take?

by Erin, may 2004.

I like to compare country horoscopes to a person's life, just for the sake of simplicity.
As people we have many significant moments in our lives - significant to us, that is. We mark off maybe a college graduation, an engagement, a wedding (or two or three), birth of each child, death of a parent, big promotion etc. They are all significant and usually life changing events. Each of those events carries its own chart, set for that particular moment. However, in the end, they can all be related back to the most significant moment of all - the birth chart.
This is how I see the search for a national chart. All subsequent events relate back to the primary moment - birth, in the case of a human being. Since many of the ancient significant dates of nation states are lost to us, we are forced to concentrate on the dates we do have. We look for the oldest charts and we do have to consider what that moment in time actually meant, historically. What changed, if anything, on that date? What did it mean, to the nation as a whole?
Finding the primary often is a big headache in mundane, so we may have to use one or more other charts.

The sun in the 12th house (or square/opposit neptune) of politicians.

by Hans van Rossum, january 2003/november 2011.

I would like to make some remarks about the sun in the 12th house of the radix of politicians. Please note George W. Bush of the U.S.A., as well as Tony Blair of the U.K., has this placing in the birth horoscope.

Although at first thought some may think this is odd, as a sun in the 12th house would seem a rather "hidden" sun, I dont think that this placing is surprising for politicians in the limelight. Astrologically, for a certain kind of politician it is even quite explainable and logical.

Planets in the 12th have to be "found" at the start of one's life, as they are in somewhat foggy territory, a territory without borders. And they will be found only in a somewhat roundabout way. One cannot employ them directly for oneself, for a selfish purpose, but has to link them to a spiritual, creative, to a 12th house purpose. This purpose may be real or imagined by the person, as imagination also belongs to the 12th house.

In the case of a painter this may be done by using the planet in the 12th house for his "art", in his service to the arts, using the imagination for expressing things that others feel as well or to make others feel something similar as the painter felt when he made a painting using his 12th house planet - sun in this case. A painter may often feel that he is moved by something higher than himself. Something similar may be the case with a writer. A physician might, as an example, want to serve humanity and go out and join the organisation "Doctors without borders.

A person with sun in the 12th house inclined to politics will likewise only find and be able to use his sun, via a 12th house purpose, for instance by using his sun for the general "public" good or by telling or convincing himself, by imaginizing, that he is doing so. Whether he really acts for the general good or only for the general good as seen through his own mind (sound or twisted), may depend on the total horoscope, the total character, the strength of the sun, ruler, dispositor etc. One always has to look at the total horoscope to judge whether the sun in the 12th may work out in a good or a bad way.
And so the person involved may work well for others or work in a harmful way, he may have a good or bad influence on world affairs, country affairs or his city's affairs, as the case may be. He may inspire people or mislead them with his lies. The person may be of high morals or a confidence man.

The danger then is, as I see it, that the imagination does not have to cover the facts and that that person may be exagerating and manupulating facts with his imagination, his believe, his "thinking" that he has a "calling". He may, by wrongly using his immagination, come to totally irrealistic ideas about this calling, as he sees it and in which he has made himself believe, and will then be blind to other opinions and to the real facts. He may even consider himself "godlike" unfailable etc. If the sun is weak in the horoscope, the imagination of that politician may easely turn out to produce lies, lies that may be believed by the masses so much easier because he himself has grown to believe the lies.

Sooner or later, however, the truth will come out!

So yes, in my opinion political figures may well have the sun in the 12th house and by this placing may have great influence on others, and in case their sun is weak, they can be more dangerous than political figures without this placing, as they may get completely out of bounds by believing too strongly in their socalled missions, by believing their own lies.

I think Bush and Blair are good examples of politicians with the sun in the 12th house.

It is interesting to remember that Nixon had his sun in opposition to Neptune - not quite the same as sun in 12th, but with some similar dynamics, and that also Putin and Sharon have their suns in the 12th house.

And also Obama (USA president) and Mark Rutte (Dutch prime minister) have the square sun - neptune.
Some additional thoughts about the sun in the 12th house and in derivated houses can be found in the article underneath: The sun/father in the 12th and other derivated houses.

The sun/father in the 12th and other derivated houses.

by Mike Cooper, november 2003.

Discussing Blair and Bush and their 12th house suns, they are both pious men. Blair allegedly reads the bible everyday. I wonder if 12th house Suns have any pattern in taking up the business of the "dimmed" or overshadowed Suns in their lives - the Sun that never reached the height of its powers at midday - their fathers. Its obvious how that works with Bush with the elder patriach of the family. Did a young Bush get overshadowed by his father and pushed in a direction contrary to what seemed to be the case in youth. This certainly happened with Blair. His father was ferociously driven to a political career. The son showed no interest in such matters and was playing in rock bands and being a typical long haired youth until his father had a stroke curtailing his personal ambitions and suddenly Blair became interested in politics. Maybe like a 12th house Sun Blair was burying his own self and making a "sacrifice" in order to take up the reins of his father's life path. Politics connect to the Sun and Jupiter in charts and Jupiter's natural house association is the 9th. His father's 9th house with all that ensues with political views and matters of morality, religion, morals etc is the 9th from the 4th (4th traditional house for the father) = the 12th house. With the Sun in the 12th it could be heading for conjunction with the father's midheaven (Blair's ASC) and so could be forced -not having enough strength itself in this cadent hidden house - to fulfill the ambitions of the father.
Some more thoughts about sun in the 12th house: If any other planets are in the 12 house also in a chart and the Sun has risen, then they and all they stand for are going to be rendered invisible by the Sun's glare; they are rendered helpless and "imprisoned". If they are occidental, then they rise prominently before the dawn so they are personifying matters of the night in all of its powers, so the "night" holds sway in twelfth house matters.

I am wondering whether one can generalise at all in terms of any derivated house Sun position relating to the interplay between the aspirations of the father and development of the son as a individual. For instance, in my case I have a ninth house Sun, so that would be the 6th from the 4th of the father. My father was always known as a helpful person, who would carry out any menial chore for anyone (6th of 4th). He was a handyman by trade and a local odd-job man and genuinely never had any ambition beyond that. But he was always there to "help". How did he help me? The one and only aspiration and assertion he had for me was that I got a "good education"; getting that education was the end in itself (my Ninth Sun).I also felt acutely aware of his sacrifices and how his selfless "strong work ethic" supported that, and how he never questioned my subsequent wandering "bohemian" youth period and antithesis to the work ethic. Other than that he never ever pushed me or guided me towards any goals. So there is a good description of my father-son "issues". Interesting way, of looking at the sun's house-placings I thought and tons of ramifications.

Uranus in Piscus and Neptune in Aquarius, in mutual reception.

by Hans van Rossum, january 2003.

I give you below the horoscope for the ingress (entrance) of Uranus in Pisces, the sign of Neptune, on march 10th 2003, while Neptune is still in Aquarius, the sign of Uranus.
September 15th 2003 Uranus will be back in Aquarius, untill december 30th 2003, when Uranus will again be in piscus and stay there untill may 28th 2010, to then enter Aries.

So this mutual reception will last about 7 years. Obviously while we can say something about the influence of this mutual reception, this is only part of the picture as other influences are at work as well.

Uranus, the planet of new techniques, of the instinctive feeling what the future has to offer us and how we may achieve this, in Piscus may mean a strong inclination towards world peace as the only means to safe the earth. It may mean the use of spectacular new ways to help undeveloped countries, such as in Africa, into becoming selfsupporting and stable and peaceful. Neptune, the planet of imagination and compassion in the sign of humanitarian goals will strengthen this trend. Imagination may be used for humanity to make a step forward. Connected together, Uranus and Neptune may also give unexpected technical changes in the creative fields, such as fashion, painting, music. They may also give a strong feeling to many people, that in order to survive we need peace, we have to stop the development of deadlier and deadlier weapons that run increased risks of falling in wrong hands.

We may see peace movements on the one hand, possibly larger than ever before; leaders of world powers on the other hand may also be saying they want peace, be it that the two groups may not see eye to eye on how to achieve this. The first group will want peace right now, the second group may think they have to establish their power and enforce peace.
The problem with neptunian imagination is, that one may imagine to have found the right course and truly believe in it, but the course may be pure imagination lacking all contact with reality. These things will not happen all at once and right at the beginning of the mutual recentionbut may gradually gain in strength. Obviously happenings may take many forms, for a better or for an imagined better world. The powers that be will fight and try to suppress changes they don't understand or don't want and take a (desparate) last stand.

To get an idea of the possibilities it is interesting to look at the key-meanings of Uranus, Neptune, Aquarius and Piscus and play with the possible combinations.
We will have to see what is going to happen. One thing is sure: we will see new, unexpected, sudden developments that are hard to imagine as yet.

I mentioned that there will be other planetary influences at work too. One of the more important will be the Saturn Pluto cycle, which had its last opposition 26th may 2002. It is the fight between the powers in charge and the groups that want to break down existing rules, existing lines of power, by any means, however forceful. This may turn people into fanatics, people of different beliefs or religions may become highly tolerant. This opposition in previous times has also meant the start of a depression, of declining prices for shares, of unemployment, of government deficits, generally lasting until close to the next conjunction - which in this case will be in 2020. All in all something different from the mutual reception of Uranus and Neptune

We have other aspects at work of the slower planets; we won't go into those for the moment.

Can we say anything about the chart above, which is drawn for the ingress in London. So what will happen, how will the world look about 7 years from now. We can see trends and use our imagination and guess, but only time will tell; history may repeat itself in some respects but certainly not in all respects.

Does the horoscope of the ingress tell us something. Obviously, house placings depend on the place on earth we take. In the chart above I have taken London, as Greenwich is the world standard meridian, but does this count? An ascendant Balance could mean a lot of diplomatic efforts and Jupiter close to the mc could mean more benovelent rulers. Still, it might be better to just stick to planets in signs and aspects. And even so, can we treat the beginning of an ingress as the birth of a period and the horoscope of that event as showing us the character of that period? I find this a difficult question to reply to.

The Moon is in Gemini: the people will be in a position to get more and better information outside official channels, will know more about neighbouring countries, from the internet. The Sun in Piscus suits the period well, but the sun has difficult aspects: squares with Moon, Saturn and Pluto, the last one exact within 2 seconds. On the other hand, a mutual reception with Jupiter is a supporting factor. Pluto is opposit Saturn and Moon. We might say hard times, ruthless fights; will there be a chance for peace and better living conditions for all in the end?

Comments are welcome; one thing is sure: these coming years we shall see unexpected changes, possibly and hopefully with a humanity more concerned about the well-being of others.

U.S.A. presidential elections november 2000 - january 2001, who will win, Bush or Gore?

by Hans van Rossum, august 2000.

I would like to share some thoughts about who will be the USA next president coming January 20th 2001; these thoughts may sound somewhat naive, but why make issues more complicated than necessary!
1. First of all, I have felt rather frustrated with astrology, in which I believe wholeheartedly, as for someone to become president of the mighty USA this must be considered a major event in his/her life (even if someone already was governor of one of the states or vicepresident) and as such this event should stick out by major transits, as well as by major secondary directions, as well as by solar arc directions or by major declination transits, so one should logically get easy results by just using one's own favourite system. Likewise, coming so close and then failing to be elected can be considered a major event (be it disappointing) as well and as such should likewise stick out by major transits etc.
2. Therefore looking at the chart for the election date and comparing who has the better chance of the 2 candidates should not be necessary, as based on their own radix charts it should be clear that one will have very positive, the other very negative transits or progressions.
3. In addition, looking at the vicepresidents to shed more light on the matter should not be necessary either.
4. And, since the election and inauguration dates are known, finetuning to predicting a date to me seems not necessary either.
5. So, trying to come to a clear opinion I have followed my favourate system of major transit periods (as I generally and very satisfactory do with my clients) and came up with following:
Gore:
uranus opposition mars (about exact 28/2-2/3, 27/8-1/9, 19-23/12 2000)
saturn opposition cheiron (about exact 9-10/6 2000, 9-17/1, 2-10/2 2001)
jupiter inconjunct moon (about exact 17/7, 21-22/12 2000, 1-2/3 2001
saturn conjunct venus (about exact 25-26/6, 7-9/12 2000, 12-13/3 2001
A bunch of stressful transits; especially the latter transit means sobering up on relations, selfworth, lifestyle and having to turn inward, so no way the right mood to have won the presidency. In my mind all clearly transits for a defeat.
Bush:
uranus trine jupiter (about exact 29/2-2/3, 27-28/8, 19-23/12 2000)
uranus trine Nmnode (about exact 29/3-2/4, 21-25/7 2000, 18-20/1 2001)
jupiter trine neptue (about exact 1/8, 29-30/11 2000, 22/3 2001)
jupiter square mars (about exact 25-26/8, 3-4/11 2000, 10/4 2001)
pluto inconjunct sun (about exact 30/12/2000-4/1/2001, 7-13/6, 29/10-3/11/2001
Some very good trines, one square but from jupiter with mars, giving enormous energy, and an inconjunct from pluto but which only is exact after the election result and as such quite explainable as feeling awed and worried, by the power bestowed upon him and only now really and somewhat suddenly felt.

So in my mind Bush clearly is the winner.

I have tried to keep my personal preferences out of play; while working with astrology personal feelings should not cloud the issues.
I would like to stress that my method refers to this special type of prediction, where event (election), date/dates (dates election and inauguration) and subject/subjects (Bush and Gore) are known. Other types of prediction such as predicting weather, earthquakes, time of death of a person, wars, etc. etc. will need their own approach. Well, the 7th November and even more so, the inauguration date in January next year will show whether these transit-periods truly have shown the outcome!

Pluto Transits and taking Decisions.

by Hans van Rossum, january 2002.

In my opinion there is a "golden" rule about important pluto transits: when it is not absolutely necessary, then do not take decisions about your life, your relations, untill the transit effect is past, which in case of more transits due to the retrograde effect means: till the effect of the last of the transits is past.
After all, during pluto transits one is in the middle of a process of transformation and deep self examination. If one takes important decisions that change one's lifestyle before the whole process has come to an end, those decisions might not suit the new you that has emerged at the end of the transits.
So if at all possible, take your time to look at who you are and what suits you at that time.

The upcoming transits of Pluto in opposition
to the USA Mars.

by Hans van Rossum, october 2003.

Someone asked what effects one could expect from these transits, partiling 27th january 2003, 24th may 2004 and 26th november 2004, so let us fantasize:

Mars, if used the right way, is about using energy, about fighting for worthy causes, not for selfish causes only, is about taking the initiative, not about going it all alone and enforcing others to do as one thinks they shouls; is about loyalty and defending what has value, not about bombing and attacking and enforcing. Not using mars the right way but agressively, oppressively, selvishly, is almost asking for a transit of pluto in opposition to it!

If we take mars as energy and agression, as all of the above, we might see a period coming up, when the USA is going to be forced to learn a lesson (the hard/pluto way) about how to handle its energy, how to express its energetic/agressive side and also how to handle the energy coming from outside, such as oil, terrorism etc. in the right way.

Maybe one of the ways the Pluto opposition to the natal USA mars will express itself is that it will challenge, in a big, devastating way, the present use of its Mars by the USA. That it will affect the convictions or attitudes of Bush and his collegues in the USA government and of a number of Americans, namely that the most powerful army build up (I understand the USA is spending more on its military and on development of new arms than the military spending of the rest of the world put together) will solve all power and moral questions; that it will strengthen the USA's position as the sole world power, that can, wants and will have to decide things for the whole world and force the world to accept and live according to USA standards, to accept USA trading customs, commercial TV programs, in short, to live as much as possible according to what Americans think is the right way.

The challenge may materialize by military setbacks, by setbacks in the environment (such as pollution, as warming up of the earth caused by wrong laws re energy use), by terrorisme aimed at the USA etc. Or by an energetic protest movement from both inside and outside the USA, asking, forcefully, for new USA standards for the use of its own energy and of other energy sources. Pluto may thus cause severe setbacks of the USA establishment regarding its use and build-up of the military and its civil-rights repression on the one side and agressive protests inside and outside the USA on the other side, forcing a change in the USA expression of its Mars, in sofar as this expression has gone wrong or even haywire. Maybe during this Pluto transit things have to become worse in order to become better. Pluto transits ask for changes and the question is asked more friendly when one is willing to look at what is wrong, and more forcefull when one is not willing to look the question in the eye. One thing is clear: if the Pluto request for change is ignored, one can expect many unpleasant events that will eventually force the changes anyway.

Stormy, even tempestuous times ahead for the USA?!

It is easy to imagine some very bad scenarios for the Pluto transits in opposition to the USA Mars, but let's hope for the best!
