It's been a very long time since you've heard from me, on this site. The cause was another tragical loss in my family. Again I have been through some very sad times.

Now, I am working - with a lot of patience - on my comeback. And I am very proud of the Ghana football team! Poor Asamoah Gyan... Ghana would have been amongst the best four of the World Cup, had he scored that penalty. I truly hope he can get over this.

Hello everybody! I am back, in all ways. I have left the unfortunate year 2008 behind me and I am ready for a hopefully prosperous summer.

I am also back in Netherlands, after a training camp in Spain. Those two weeks have been very good to me; the times I ran there on the 60, 100, 150 and 200 were pretty good.

Besides all that, it also have been busy times because of my Esther Dankwah Foundation. On top of this page, you'll find a link to the website about that good cause. And during the Club Competition (may 17, Haag Atletiek) there's a lot of attention voor my Foundation!

SEPTEMBER 30, 2008

After a difficult, frustrating season, with many injuries and bad luck, I have found my rest and have started to focus on other things.

I am busy learning the Dutch language, which is not easy at all. Dutch is a very complicated language, haha! I also started my own foundation.

With My Esther Dankwah Foundation I want to support the children I met when I visited the Osu Children's Home in Accra, Ghana. I've opened a special page on my website about this.

This is really an unbelievable year for me. I got injured again, just as I was fighting back.

During the Gouden Spike meeting I saw the track was empty, so I decided to go for a warm up. I sprinted with my head down and because of that I did not see that Timothy Beck was walking in front of me. I crashed into him...

It all seemed not so bad and I decided to run the 100. But halfways I felt not good and on the way home it got worse: a heavy pain in my knee.

In the hospital I was happy to hear that the injury was not so serious. So: now on to Madrid, for an important 4x1!

Hello! I am back from Addis Abeba where I competed in the African championships. It was a crazy week!

Individually I reached the semi finals of the 100. I was quite satisfied with that. Then: the relay... we ran the fastest time in the series but then it went wrong. On my way to Vida, with the baton in my hand, I felt I was about to faint, to black out. I reached her, handed over the baton and fell, injured my hamstring.

In the hospital they gave me oxygen and some medication, it seems the lack of ogygen in the air made me faint. My first question was: "did I hand over the baton properly?" We got the silver medal.

Hello my friends! Yes, I have been quiet for a while. Because of personal circumstances me and my coach have decided to put an early end to my indoor season 2008. Sometimes it is just like that...

So, now I am fully focused on my outdoor season. In april I wil go to Spain for a training camp. My main focus there is to work hard on my speedwork. That's really important, because this is a BIG year: first the All African Championships in Ethiopia (april 30 - may 4) and then ofcourse the Olympics in Bejing!

Hello everybody! I assume that you, just like me, are enjoying the African Nations Cup right now. The tournament is held in my country: Ghana. And my team is doing well! Ghana won it's first three matches (2-1 against Guinee, 1-0 against Namibia and 2-0 against Morocco) and gets better and better. But Ivory Coast seems strong to me too!

My first indoors meeting came quite unexpected. Shortly before the Pedus Indoor Meeting in Luxembourg (jan 19th) I heard that I had to run there. I won my heat in 7.51 and was 6th in the final (7.56) in which Vida Anim almost crashed into me...

Hello everybody! A lot of news: I am busy with my preperation for the 2008 season, with as first goal: the indoors tournaments.

I already completed a training camp in England.

And: I prolongued my sponsor contract with Moneygram for another year!

And funny: january 5, 22:00 CET (21:00 UK time) you can see me in King Franky's African Stage Show on BEN TV (internet television).

Hello! Well, I am back from the Osaka World Championships and as you may know already: we (Ghana) did not reach the final of the 4x1 there. We (Gifty, Elizabeth, Vida and me) ran our season's best (43.76) but that was not enough in that strong field. But we're qualified for the 2008 Olympics! And I was proud to carry the Ghana flag at the opening ceremony!

My season is over now. So it's time for some rest, perhaps a trip and then the preparations for indoor season 2008. I'll keep you posted!

Hello from Japan! As you are reading this, I am in Osaka already to compete there (with Ghana) in the 4x1 relay of the World Championships. I am ready for this!

The last weeks I took it quite easy. I won the 100 at two meetings (Ninove and Breda) but those were more training moments to me than real goals. This season is almost over so I needed to fine-tuning myself to be able to focus completely on Osaka.

The Ghanaian relay team (Vida Anim, Mariama Salifu, Gifty Addy and me) knows it will not be easy to score a good result in Japan. But: anything is possible, especially in a relay race.

The first round is september 1, something like 02:45 hrs in your time.

GOLD! Yes, we didi it again! The Ghanaian relay team was the best in the 4 x 100 meters during the All African Games in Algeria.

Individually, my tournament wasn't a great succes. As usual I had some fights with the starter, and in the 100 as well as in the 200 my tournament ended in the semi finals.

But the relay took away all my bad feelings. We did not start as favorites, as the Nigerian team looked stronger. In the heats we already beat them though: 44.31 against 44.33.

In the final it was even closer. After the finish, the Nigerians thought they'd won. But we (Vida Anim, Mariama Salifu, Gifty Addy and me) were 0.01 second faster: 43.84 against 43.85. And we're qualified for Osaka (World Championships)!

OK, it's time for Big Business... I am ready for the most important part of this season, perhaps a bit too much! The last months I focused on performing, on my goals and on the relay team. Now I take some time to focus on ME and then it's off to Algiers, for the All African Games.

What I am enjoying right now: currently, once/twice a week I am training a group of kids who live in my city. I do that at the Haag Atletiek, name of this project: Cool Athletics. There is some talent amongst these kids!

Soon we (the Ghanaian athletes) have to travel to Ghana, where we will gather to travel together to Algiers. That is the venue for this year's All African Games, where I will compete on the 100, the 200 and the 4x100 meters...

Hello everybody! The outdoor season has really started now and I feel good, strong and happy! I just returned from Bremen (Germany), where I competed with Gifty, Elizabeth and Rosina in the Run For Help Meeting.

I started the day really strong: I won my 100 meter series in 11.59 (with a little backwind...). Then the final: the starter did not stop the start procedure when a phone ringtone disturbed us. That was bad for the concentration, but: I won, in 11.73. Pascal van Assendelft was second.

In the 200 I ran very well, but I gave away the first place in the final meters. But 23.97 meant that I had equalled my PB, and that in these early stages of the season!

The 4x1 also went good. Ghana won, in 45.04.

Hello everybody! Long time! I have been busy with training, training and more training, to be well prepared for this outdoor season. And I somehow coördinated the three month training stage in Netherlands, of three Ghanaian athletes: Gifty Addy, Elizabeth Amolofo en Rosina Amenebede. Rosina is a long jumper/hurdler, the other two are sprinters who are part of the Ghana relay team.

Saturday mei 5th we had our first chance to test our relay skills. Rosina completed the Ghana quartet that won in Lisse (Ter Specke Bokaal). There was also a individual 150 m (a crazy distance, but hey!) which I won in 17.64. I should have done a little bit better to win the overall 'Bokaal' (Cup).

Hello everybody! Let me first wish all my fellow Ghanaians a happy Independence Day, or better: Independence Week! Because this year it's 50 years ago that Ghana became independent, so this time it's not only a day, but a full wéék of celebrations. On a moment like this I miss my motherland more than ever...

Also my last indoor competition of the season brought me not much luck. This was in Germany: The Erdgas Hallenmeeting, feb. 23. In the series everything went OK: I eased into the final with 7.49. But in that final I stumbled a little bit which is a disaster in a 60 meters: 6th in 7.53.

After that, I spent a week in Paris, with some friends. That was some kind of holiday, but I also trained there. Meanwhiles, The Netherlands scored four medals in the European Indoor Championships. I want to congratulate Arnoud Okken, Marcel van der Westen, Karin Rückstuhl and Gregory Sedoc with their successes! Especially Gregory with his gold medal (60 hurdles) whom I traveled so often with to meetings in other countries. Well done!

Now I am aiming for my outdoors season; I already have received some interesting invitations!

Hello! Right now I am in the middle of a discussion about the participation of foreign athletes to the Dutch Indoor Champs (Gent, feb. 17). At the bottom of this text you can see the link to this discussion.

I am, as a Ghanaian athlete, for some four years in Netherlands right now and in the last two years I participated, not for competition, in the nationals. Results: two wins (60 m.), silver (2005) and bronze (2006) on the 100 and bronze on the 200 (2005). This year, all of a sudden the Dutch Track Union (KNAU) has changed its rules: for the first time in many years foreigners are not welcome in the nationals. Until now it was a policy to invite a few now and then, especially those who lived here for a longer time and who'd lift the competition to a higher level.

The fact that I won't be there in Gent is not so bad, but the fact that the KNAU did not tell me anything about this decision (personally, nore via my trainer) does hurt me a lot. If they would have, that would have been a very welcome sign of respect towards me. But just in like the months that I hoped to compete for The Netherlands one day, I did not hear anything...

FEBRUARY 4, 2007

I am sad, really sad right now. Again I had bad luck; it seems 2007 is not my lucky year, until now. This time it went wrong in Gent.

I was invited to the KBC Indoor Meeting in Gent (Belgium): live on television and Merlene Ottey was one of the contenders! In my semi final I met, amongst others, the strong French lady Muriel Hurtis. Is started very well, perhaps a little too very well. I was leading after 30 meters but then I felt the pain, a really bad pain. I continued my race, but not on 100%, and finished as fourth in 7.50. I knew it immediatly: a pulled hamstring... The tournament doctor told me I'd be out of competition for at least ten days/two weeks.

The British Jeanette Kwakye won the final while I was sidelined, with my left leg taped tightly.

It's driving me crazy: I feel stronger than ever but I'm not able to prove it until now; first because of my ankle and now this. But believe me: I will be back!

JANUARY 28, 2007

Two competitons in one week have proven me that I'm becoming faster and faster... The last five 60 meters I ran, I kept on improving myself. I won four of the five, in spite of still suffering from that twisted ankle.

January 21st I ran in Dortmund, Germany. My series and my semi final I won in 7.62 and 7.56. I still found it hard to run 'free', without being worried anout my ankle. Than the final came, in which I won in 7.52. That was my first win in 2007!

A week later (jan 27th) I attended the Pedus Meeting in Luxembourg. My travel companions were Youssef Rhalfioui en Timothy Beck; thanks for a nice trip guys! Last year I scored my PB in that meeting: 7.35. This time it was not that fast. My series were OK, relaxed: I won in 7.48. The final started with a false start, so the next start would mean a disqualification. The second start came much faster than I expected so I left late, as last. But I succeeded in regaining a lot of terrain and scored a third place, in 7.46.

Now I am aiming for a 'perfect', injury free race. I feel strong! For Luxembourg pictures: see the pictures section!

Hello everybody! 2007 has finally also started as a sporting year for me. January 13th I had my first competition; that was in Dour, the south of Belgium. I scored a second place in 7.55 which was a good achievement, all things considered.

The week before Dour I got a cold, but that wasn't so bad. Friday I rode to Belgium, with fellow athlete Dennis Tilburg. Saturday evening was competition evening. During the warm up, things went wrong. I sprained my ankle (which already happened a few weeks before that, during training) because I landed with my foot into a hole in the ground, caused by construction work. For a while it seemed that running was impossible that evening, but I don't like to surrender and sprinted to a second place.

But now I am stuck with a painful ankle. A few days of rest might work, and then (jan. 21) it's competition time again!

Hello everybody!

I have some great news at the end of a really strange year: I have finally found a sponsor! At the end of last month I signed a sponsor contract for 2007 with Moneygram, a money transfer company. I am very happy that Moneygram gives me this opportunity!

Yes, it was a crazy year. It started out so well, with some really good achievements in the indoor season. But then, I had to go to Ghana for some three months. That ruined my preparations for the outdoor season completely...

But at the end of the season I scored some really nice results. At the All African Games in Mauritius, I won a GOLD medal with the Ghana 4x100 relay team! Because of that, the IAAF invited me and fellow Ghanaian Vida Anim for the World Cup in Athens, where we had to represent the African continent in the 4x100. That went very well: we won a bronze medal.

And now there is this great news from Moneygram. I'm telling you: I am training my ass of as I am really focused right now. Not only for the 2007 season but also for 2008: the Olympic Games...

Hello everybody! This week I have returned form Athens, where I competed in the World Cup. That is a track event for the continents and I was invited to represent Africa in the 4x100 relay.

Our team was: Francisca Idoko, Endurance Ojokolo, Esther Dankwah and Vida Anim. So after the two Nigerian ladies I had to run the second curve and hand over the baton to my friend Vida Anim. My race was very well and I was very happy with the 3rd place we achieved (behind Americas and Russia; USA got disqualified).

It was a nice experience that made me realise I still have a long way to go. But it was most of all motivating: meeting stars like Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson is like meeting people who are the prove that you can reach your goals.

Monday I've returned from Mauritius, where was one of the Ghanaians that competed in the All African Championships. My 100 meters was poor, mostly because of the very strong headwind. I took it as a good lesson.

Two days later luck changed. Together with Vida Anim (who won 100 as well as 200!), Gifty Addy and Elizabeth Amolofo I represented Ghana in the 4x100 relay final... and we won! I was the third runner, so I ran the second curve, and I performed excellent! We beat favorites Nigeria which was a very nice and big surprise.

Today (july 8): the National Track Championships in Amsterdam. Good news: I feel I am getting my rhythm back and I feel I am almost ready for a great rest of the summer season.

In my series (in which we had to rush to the blocks, no time for preparation) I finished as first, in 11.94. Mami finished very close to me as second. In the final I had a great start but after 60 meters Jacqueline Poelman passed me by. My last 20 meters were far from good: a signal that I still have some work to do! Third... I learned a lot this saturday and I am happy for Jacqueline, who is a great competitor!

Today, july 2, I made my long awaited come back as a track athlete. I did that during the Nelli Cooman Games in Stadskanaal, where last year I scored a third place (in 11.66). This time it was not that good: 4th in 12.04. But as I told you before: I have to get used to sprinting-on-a-track again, as I missed that a lot during my three month stay in Ghana. My goal is to get 'THAT' feeling back again as soon as possible!

At the meeting, I met my Cameroon friend Mirjam Mani again. We laughed our asses off together :).

And about the Black Stars team: well done boys, I am very proud of your World Cup performances!

JUNE 25 2006

Hello everybody! Right now I am back in Netherlands. The last three months I spent in Ghana and now I am back here... I must admit: I miss my parents!

Now I must make sure I prepare myself very well for the rest of the summer season here. I am in good shape but must work on my speed work a little bit. My first competition is july 2.

But much of my interests right now ofcourse goes to the Black Stars, the Ghana World Cup team. June 27 they will play Brazil and up till now I am very proud of them! Ghana is performing very well, in it's first World Cup appearance. I wish the boys good luck and they must know: in Holland we are praying for them!

JUNE 1 2006

After a few months in Ghana I am about to travel back to The Netherlands. It was good to be 'home' again and to see my family again, but I am ready to return to The Netherlands!

Especially concerning my training, I missed The Netherlands. In Ghana, my trainings were mostly about strength and endurance. Trust me: I feel stronger than ever, hahaha! But: training your 'speedwork' is impossible there, as currently, there's no track available... It won't suprize you that I can't wait to run a real '100' again!

And a pity I had to miss the FBK Games. I could have run against Marion Jones... but there will be more chances!

FEBRUARY 28, 2006

It was a strange, complex week for me, I had a lot on my head. This all unfortunately resulted in a not so successfull appearance in the KBC Flanders Indoor in Gent: 7.41 in the final, a 6th place. Kim Gevaert won in an astonishing 7.14!

Yes, a crazy week. As you might know, I am aiming to run for Netherlands, one fine day. That means a lot of paperwork and patience, and the next step of that process means that I will have to spend some months in Ghana now... This news came as a not so nice surprize to me; now I can forget about the start of the Dutch outdoor season.

I did it again! Just like last year I was the best over 60 meters, during the National Indoor Championships in Gent (B).

In the heat I could take it easy a little: 7.49. My three Haag Atletiek-colleagues Mami Asante, Pascal van Assendelft and Kristel Spierenburg also reached the final without much trouble, which resulted in a final that consisted for 50% of Haag Atletiek girls, haha!

My start in the final was very good and I reached the finish as first in 7.38, beating Pascal (2nd) and Mami (3rd).

Unfortunately earlier that week I did not receive an invitation for the race in Dusseldorf, feb. 17th...

FEBRUARY 13, 2006

It have been two calm weeks for me, although calm: the
training sessions went on and on... Saturday february 11 I had a race, in Gent. It was a crazy afternoon... The organisation was changing the time schedule constantly, which resulted in me and Mami Asante being warned that our race was about to start in a few minutes, while performing a relaxed warm-up. You can imagine that this was far from one of my best 60's: 7.58, same time as the winning girl. I could have done much better this afternoon.

Next week Gent again: the Dutch Indoor Championships, whereby last year I won the 60. And perhaps a meeting
friday in Dortmund!

JANUARY 28, 2006

2006 Is starting off really well for me. Two new PB's on the 60, in one week!

Luxembourg, jan 27: in the heats I clocked a very good 7.35; 0.07 sec. faster than five days earlier. In the final I had some trouble with the start: 7th, in 7.48.

One day later: another race; Indoor Martiniplaza in Groningen. I won a combined classification over 50 and 60 m. there: 6.55 and 7.64. And: eight hours in the car, haha!

My first competition of the year, a 60 meters indoor in Dortmund, Germany (jan 22), brought me a win in 7.42 seconds - a new PB! My old PB was 7.46, I ran that during the Dutch Indoor Champs 2005.

6 JULI 2010

Het is erg lang geleden dat ik hier iets van me heb laten horen. Dat komt doordat het alweer moeilijke tijden voor me waren. Een nieuw tragisch verlies in mijn familie zorgde ervoor dat ik het weer zwaar heb gehad.

Nu werk ik geduldig aan een come-back, en ben ik weer trots op het Ghanese voetbalteam. Ik voel mee met Asamoah Gyan; als hij die penalty benut had, hadden we bij de beste vier van het WK gezeten! Ik hoop dat hij dit moment weet te verwerken.

Hallo allemaal! Ik ben terug, letterlijk en figuurlijk. Het voor mijn moeilijke jaar 2008 heb ik achter me gelaten en ik ben klaar voor een hopelijk succesvolle zomer.

Ik ben ook terug in Nederland. Twee weken trainingskamp in Spanje heeft me goed gedaan. De tijden die ik er, tijdens de training, liep op de 60, 100, 150 en 200 waren hoopgevend.

Verder zijn het drukke tijden geweest door mijn Esther Dankwah Foundation. Bovenaan deze pagina zie je een link naar die pagina. Ook tijdens de Clubcompetitie (17 mei, Haag Atletiek) is er aandacht voor mijn Foundation!

30 SEPTEMBER 2008

Na een heel moeilijk en frustrerend seizoen, vol blessureleed en tegenslag, ben ik tot rust gekomen en neem ik tijd voor andere zaken.

Zo ben ik nu druk bezig met het leren van de Nederlandse taal. Dat valt echt niet mee... jullie taal is erg ingewikkeld, haha! Verder werk ik, en ben ik nu serieus begonnen aan het opzetten van een goed doel!

Met mijn Esther Dankwah Foundation wil ik de kinderen steunen die ik zag toen ik in Ghana het Osu Children's Home bezocht. Ik heb een speciale pagina op mijn site hieraan gewijd!

Wat een idioot jaar is dit. Ik ben wéér geblesseerd geraakt, net nu ik me aan het terugvechten was...

Tijdens de Gouden Spike was de baan even verlaten en ging ik mijn warming-up doen. Ik sprintte met mijn hoofd omlaag zodat ik niet zag dat Timothy Beck inmiddels op de baan liep. Ik botste bóvenop hem...

De pijn viel mee, ik liep daarna de 100 meter. Maar halverwege voelde ik me niet zo goed. En op weg naar huis werd het erger, ik kreeg een hevige pijn in mijn knie.

Onderzoek in het ziekenhuis leverde op dat de blessure erg meevalt. Nu naar Madrid, voor een belangrijke 4x100!

7 MEI 2008

Hallo! Ik ben terug uit Addis Abeba, waar ik deelnam aan de Afrikaanse kampioen- schappen. Het was een bewogen week!

Individueel reikte ik tot de halve finale op de 100 meter. Daarmee kon ik tevreden zijn. Toen de estafette... we gingen met de snelste tijd de finale in en daarin ging het mis. Met het stokje in mijn hand, op weg naar Vida, zag ik ineens zwart voor de ogen. Ik wist haar toch te bereiken en ging daarna 'out', waarbij ik ook een hamstring-blessure opliep.

In het ziekenhuis kreeg ik zuurstof; waarschijnlijk had ik daar een tekort aan gehad. Mijn eerste vraag was: "heb ik het stokje goed doorgegeven?" We werden tweede.

14 MAART 2008

Dag allemaal! Ja, het was even stil. Door persoonlijke omstandigheden heb ik, in overleg met mijn trainer, besloten mijn indoorseizoen vroeg te beëindigen. Het was even niet anders!

Ik richt me nu dus volledig op het outdoor-seizoen. In april ga ik op trainingskamp in Spanje. Daar kan ik dan goed aan mijn speedwork werken. Dat moet ook wel, want het wordt een heel belangrijk seizoen: eerst de All African Championships (30 april tot 4 mei in Ethiopië) en dan natuurlijk de Olympische Spelen in Peking!

28 JANUARI 2008

Hallo allemaal! Ik hoop dat jullie net als ik (via Eurosport) genieten van de African Nations Cup. Dat voetbaltoernooi wordt in mijn geboorteland gehouden: Ghana. En mijn land doet het goed! De eerste drie wedstrijden werden gewonnen (2-1 tegen Guinee, 1-0 tegen Namibië en 2-0 tegen Marokko) en Ghana wordt beter en beter. Maar ik vind Ivoorkust ook sterk.

Mijn eerste indoor-meeting van dit jaar kwam wat onverwacht. Ik hoorde pas heel laat dat ik moest meedoen aan de Pedus Indoor Meeting in Luxemburg (19/01). Ik won mijn heat in 7.51 en werd zesde in een chaotische finale, waarin Vida Anim bijna bovenop me botste...

Hallo Allemaal! Veel nieuws: ben druk bezig met de voorbereidingen op 2008, en dan met name het eerste doel: het indoor-seizoen. Ik heb onder meer een trainingskamp in Engeland achter de rug!

Verder heb ik mijn sponsorcontract met Moneygram voor een jaar verlengd!

En grappig: zaterdag 5 januari, 22:00 uur Nederlandse tijd, kun je me (via internet) zien op de zender BEN TV, ik was er te gast in de African Stage Show van King Franky.

Hoi! Nou, ik ben terug uit Osaka (WK). Zoals jullie denk ik al weten, zijn we er met Ghana niet in geslaagd de finale van de 4x1 te bereiken. We (Gifty, Elizabeth, Vida en ik liepen onze beste jaartijd (43.76) maar dat was in dat sterke veld helaas niet voldoende. Wél zijn we gekwalificeerd voor de Olympische Spelen. En: ik was trots dat ik onze vlag mocht dragen bij de openingsceremonie.

Mijn seizoen zit er nu op. Tijd dus voor wat rust, misschien nog even op reis en dan de voorbereiding op indoorseizoen 2008! Ik hou jullie op de hoogte!

21 AUGUSTUS 2007

Hallo vanuit Osaka! Nu jullie dit lezen zit ik in Japan, waar ik met de Ghanese estafetteploeg ga deelnemen aan de Wereldkampioen- schappen atletiek. Ik heb er zin in, ik ben er klaar voor!

De afgelopen weken deed ik het kalm aan. Ik boekte overwinningen in Ninove en Breda maar dat waren meer trainingen voor me dan echte doelen. Het was vooral zaak voor me om mezelf nog even te hervinden aan het einde van het seizoen, om me te kunnen focussen op Osaka.

De Ghanese estafetteploeg (Vida Anim, Mariama Salifu, Gifty Addy en ik) begrijpt dat het niet makkelijk zal worden om een mooi resultaat te scoren in Japan. Maar: alles is mogelijk, zeker in een estafetterace!

GOUD! Ja, het is ons wéér gelukt! Met de Ghanese estafetteploeg hebben we de 4 x 100 meter gewonnen, tijdens de All African Games in Algerije.

Het individuele toernooi verliep niet zo goed voor me. Ik had zoals gewoonlijk weer wat problemen met de starter en kwam zowel op de 100 als de 200 niet verder dan de halve finale.

Maar alles kwam goed op de 4x100. We startten niets als favorieten, omdat de Nigeriaanse ploeg er wat sterker uitzag. In de voorronde versloegen we onze rivales echter: 44.31 tegenover 44.33.

In de finale was het nóg closer. Na de finish dachten de Nigeriaansen dat ze gewonnen hadden, maar wij (Vida Anim, Mariama Salifu, Gifty Addy en ik) bleken één honderste sneller: 43.84 tegen 43.85. Nu mogen we naar het WK in Osaka!

23 JUNI 2007

Zo... het Grote Werk gaat beginnen. Ik ben er kláár voor, misschien wel een beetje te veel! De laatste maanden heb ik me enorm gefocust op presteren, mijn doelen en de estafetteploeg. Nu neem ik even wat gas terug, om vervolgens 100% klaar te zijn voor allereerst de All African Games.

Wat ik nu leuk vind: momenteel train ik één, twee keer per week een groep Haagse kinderen. Dat gebeurt bij Haag Atletiek en het heet: Cool Athletics. Er zit heel wat talent tussen!

Binnenkort moeten we (de Ghanese atleten) naar Ghana, waar we ons verzamelen om af te reizen naar Algiers. Daar worden in juli de All African Games gehouden. Ik ga daar de 100, de 200 en de 4x100 meter lopen.

Hallo allemaal! Het buitenseizoen is nu echt begonnen en ik voel me goed, sterk en blij! Ik ben net terug uit Bremen, waar ik met Gifty, Elizabeth en Rosina meedeed aan de Run For Help Meeting.

Ik begon de dag ijzersterk: 11.59 (met een beetje rugwind) op de 100 meter in de serie. Dan de finale: de scheidsrechter legde de startprocedure niet stil toen een telefoon in het publiek afging. Dat ging ten koste van de concentratie... Maar: ik won, in 11.73. Pascal van Assendelft werd tweede.

Toen de 200. Die liep ik erg goed, maar vlak voor de finish gaf ik mijn eerste plaats weg. Met 23.97 evenaarde ik wél mijn PR, en dat zo vroeg in het jaar!

Ook de estafette verliep goed: Ghana won in 45.04!

Hallo allemaal! Da's lang geleden! Ik heb de afgelopen maanden véél en hárd getraind, om mezelf klaar te stomen voor dit outdoor-seizoen.

Daarnaast was ik druk met het begeleiden van drie Ghanese atletes, die nu voor een trainingsstage van drie maanden in Nederland zijn: Gifty Addy, Elizabeth Amolofo en Rosina Amenebede. Rosina is een verspringster/hordenloopster, de andere twee zijn sprintsters die deel uitmaken van het Ghanese 4x100 meter-team.

Zaterdag vijf mei hadden we onze eerste estafette-test. Rosina vulde het kwartet aan dat in Lisse won op de 4x100 bij de Ter Specke Bokaal. Op de 150 meter (gekke afstand, maar ja...) was ik de beste: 17.64, net niet genoeg om de Bokaal bij de vrouwen te winnen...

6 MAART 2007

Hallo allemaal! Allereerst wil ik op deze manier al mijn Ghanese vrienden en kennissen een geweldige Onafhankelijkheidsdag toewensen. Of eigenlijk: een Onafhankelijkheidswéék. Want dit jaar is het 50 jaar geleden dat Ghana onafhankelijk werd, en daarom is er deze keer geen sprake van een dág feest, maar een volledige wéék! Op dit soort momenten mis ik mijn moederland enorm!

Ook mijn laatste indoorwedstrijd van dit seizoen verliep niet erg gelukkig. Dat was op 23 februari, de Erdgas Hallenmeeting in Chemnitz (D). In de serie ging het goed: 7.49 en geplaatst voor de finale. Maar daarin maakte ik een soort struikeling en op de zestig meter kun je het dan vergeten: zesde in 7.53...

Daarna ben ik een weekje bij vrienden in Parijs geweest; even ertussenuit! Ik heb daar wél getraind hoor, haha! Intussen scoorde Nederland vier medailles op de EK Indoor; ik wil Arnoud Okken, Marcel van der Westen, Karin Rückstuhl en Gregory Sedoc van harte feliciteren met hun successen! Ik ben erg blij voor Gregory (goud op de 60 horen), met wie ik nogal eens in de auto zat op weg naar een meeting in het buitenland!

En nu ga ik op weg naar het buitenseizoen, ik heb al enkele aardige uitnodigingen op zak!

10 FEBRUARI 2007

Hallo! Momenteel ben ik middelpunt van een discussie die gaande is over het al dan niet welkom zijn van NIET-Nederlandse atleten op de NK Indoor van dit jaar (17 februari in Gent). De link naar die discussie zie je verder hieronder.

Ik ben nu, als Ghanese, vier jaar in Nederland en heb de laatste twee jaar, buiten mededinging, meegedaan aan de NK's alhier. Resultaten: tweemaal winst op de 60 meter (indoor), zilver (2005) en brons (2006) op de 100 en brons (2005) op de 200 meter. Dit jaar schijnt de KNAU de regels veranderd te hebben, zonder de betrokken atleten ingelicht te hebben. Buitenlanders zijn niet langer welkom op de NK's. Tot nu toe waren ze wél welkom, buiten mededinging; vooral degenen die al langere tijd in Nederland vertoefden en voor een wat interessanter deelnemersveld zouden kunnen zorgen.

Ik vind het heel jammer dat de KNAU dit besluit niet even aan mij gemeld heeft. Persoonlijk, dan wel via mijn coach. Ik had dat als een zeer welkom gebaar van respect beschouwd, maar: helaas... Net als in de tijden dat ik hoopte (en mijn best deed) om ooit voor Nederland te kunnen uitkomen, hoorde ik niets.

Balen... ik zit nu echt even te balen. Het jaar begint echt met veel pech voor me. Deze keer ging het mis in Gent...

Ik was uitgenodigd zaterdagmiddag de KBC Indoor te lopen in Gent: live op televisie, en Merlene Ottey was ook van de partij! In mijn halve finale kwam ik onder meer de Franse topper Muriel Huris tegen. Ik startte heel goed... misschien wel té goed. Na 30 meter leidde ik maar toen voelde ik pijn, hevige pijn. Ik vervolgde de race maar gaf geen 100% meer en eindigde als vierde in 7.50. Ik wist het meteen: hamstring-blessure...

Ik moest dus afzeggen voor de finale en de toernooi-arts meldde me dat ik tien dagen tot twee weken buitenspel sta. De Britse Kwakye won de finale en ik keek toe, met een ingezwachteld linkerbeen...

Het is echt om gek van te worden: ik voel me beresterk maar kan dat niet tonen, door eerst die enkel en nu dit. Ik kom terug!

28 JANUARI 2007

Twee toernooien zitten erop en ik word letterlijk beter en beter! Bij mijn laatste vijf 60 meters (waarvan ik er vier won) wist ik mezelf telkens te verbeteren, en dat terwijl ik nog steeds veel last heb van die gekneusde enkel...

21 Januari had ik een wedstrijd in Dortmund. Mijn serie won ik in 7.62 en in de halve finale zegevierde ik in 7.56. Dat ging allemaal nog vrij makkelijk, waarbij ik het moeilijk had om mijn blessure uit het hoofd te zetten. In de finale was ik nog een tikje sneller: 7.52 en mijn eerste winst van 2007 was binnen.

Een week later, de 27ste, liep ik de Pedus Meeting in Luxemburg. Ik reisde erheen met Youssef Rhalfioui en Timothy Beck en dat was erg gezellig! Vorig jaar verbaasde ik mezelf in Luxemburg met 7.35! Nu was het 7.48 in de serie (eerste) en ... de derde plaats in de finale. Daarin werd eerst vals gestart, wat de boel dus 'op scherp' zette. De tweede start was zó snel dat-ie mij verraste... ik was heel slecht weg. Maar de manier waarop ik nog veel terrein goedmaakte en naar de derde plaats liep in 7.46 geeft me veel vertrouwen, ik ben duidelijk erg sterk.

14 JANUARI 2007

Hallo allemaal! 2007 Is dan eindelijk ook sportief begonnen voor me. Ik liep 13 januari mijn eerste wedstrijdje, in Dour. Dat ligt in het zuiden van België. Ik werd tweede in 7.55, wat naar omstandigheden een goede prestatie was!

De week ervoor was ik verkouden geworden... maar dat viel allemaal wel mee. Vrijdagavond reed ik met Dennis Tilburg naar Dour en zaterdagavond was de wedstrijd. Tijdens de warming up ging het mis: ik kneusde mijn enkel (dat was een aantal weken daarvoor op de training ook al gebeurd...) toen ik met mijn voet in een slordig afgedekt gat belandde. Even leek het erop dat deelnemen van de baan was, maar ik zette dóór en werd dus tweede.

Nu zit ik met een pijnlijke enkel. Een paar dagen rust denk ik, en dan de 21ste weer een wedstrijd!

14 NOVEMBER 2006

Hallo allemaal! Ik heb héél goed nieuws aan het einde van een heel vreemd jaar: ik heb eindelijk een sponsor gevonden! Eind vorige maand tekende ik een sponsorovereenkomst voor 2007 met Moneygram. Dat is een 'money transfer'-bedrijf. Ik ben heel blij dat Moneygram mij deze kans biedt!

Ja, het was een gek jaar. Het begon zo goed, met een paar geweldige uitschieters in het indoorseizoen. Maar toen moest ik voor drie maanden naar Ghana, waardoor mijn voorbereiding op het outdoor-seizoen volledig de mist in ging.

Maar aan het einde van de jaargang boekte ik successen. Op de All African Games in Mauritius pakte ik GOUD met Ghana, op de 4x100 meter estafette. Daardoor nodigde de IAAF zowel mij als mijn landgenote Vida Anim uit om deel te nemen aan de World Cup in Athene, waar de Afrika mochten vertegenwoordigen op de 4x100. Dat ging prima: brons!

En nu dus het geweldige nieuws van Moneygram. Ik train me momenteel helemaal kapot, want ik ben enorm gefocusd. Niet alleen op komend seizoen, maar vooral op 2008: de Olympische Spelen. Ik hou jullie op de hoogte!

Hallo allemaal! Begin deze week kwam ik terug uit Athene, waar ik deelnam aan de World Cup. Dat is een toernooi voor de continenten en ik mocht Afrika vertegenwoordigen op de 4x100 meter.

Ons team was: Francisca Idoko, Endurance Ojokolo, Esther Dankwah en Vida Anim. Na de twee Nigeriaanse dames moest ik dus de tweede bocht lopen, en het stokje overhandigen aan mijn landgenote Vida Anim. Mijn race verliep erg goed en ik was heel blij met de door ons behaalde derde plaats (achter Americas en Rusland; VS werd gediskwalificeerd).

Het was een heel leuke ervaring die me deed realiseren dat ik nog een lánge weg te gaan heb. Maar ik raakte er ook door gemotiveerd: ik ontmoette mensen als Asafa Powell en Sherone Simpson en zij zijn het levende bewijs dat je kunt bereiken wat je wilt!

16 AUGUSTUS 2006

Maandag kwam ik terug uit Mauritius, waar ik, voor Ghana, deelnam aan de All African Championships. Ik liep er eerst de 100 meter en die ging niet goed, vooral door de erg sterke tegenwind. Maar ook daarvan leer je, als atlete!

Twee dagen later ging het stukken beter. Samen met Vida Anim (ze won zowel de 100 als de 200!), Gifty Addy en Elizabeth Amolofo liep ik de finale van de 4x100 meter estafette... en we wonnen! Ik nam het derde stuk voor mijn rekening, de tweede bocht dus. En dat ging fantastisch! We versloegen Nigeria en dat was even mooi als onverwacht.

8 JULI 2006

Vandaag: de Nederlandse Kampioenschappen in het Olympisch Stadion in Amsterdam. Ik krijg mijn ritme terug, voel me beter en ik vóel dat ik klaar ben voor de rest van dit zomerseizoen.

Mijn serie won ik in 11.94. Ik bleef Mami Asante nét voor en was eigenlijk alleen ontevreden over de start: we moesten vrijwel metéén naar het startblok, zonder tijd voor voorbereidingen. In de finale had ik een goede start maar zag ik na 60 meter Jacqueline Poelman voorbijkomen. De laatste 20 meter kwam ik nog veel tekort, duidelijk een teken dat ik nog wat in te halen heb. Derde... Ik heb van deze race véél geleerd en ben blij voor Jacqueline, ze is een geweldige tegenstandster!

2 JULI 2006:

Vandaag, 2 juli, maakte ik mijn langverwachte rentree als wedstrijdatlete. Dat deed ik bij de Nelli Cooman Games in Stadskanaal. Vorig jaar leverde die meeting me een derde plek op (100 m. in 11.66) - nu werd ik vierde in 12.04. Inderdaad: geen goede tijd, maar: ik moet weer even wennen aan het sprinten op een baan. De laatste keer was, door mijn verblijf in Ghana, lange tijd geleden!

Maar: het was een leuke dag, waarop ik mijn vriendin Mirjam Mani (uit Kameroen) weer eens tegenkwam. We hebben wat afgelachen samen, haha!

Nog even over het WK voetbal: ik ben echt trots op het Ghanese team, dat in de achtste finale verloor van Brazilië!

25 JUNI 2006

Hallo allemaal! Ik ben terug in Nederland! Na drie jaar Nederland was ik even terug in mijn geboorteland Ghana, voor drie maanden. Nu ben ik terug... en mis ik mijn ouders!

Nu is het zaak dat ik me goed ga voorbereiden op het zomerseizoen. In Ghana heb ik keihard getraind, maar het trainen op een échte baan heb ik daarbij gemist. Mijn eerste wedstrijd is op 2 juli.

Maar eerst ga ik natuurlijk Ghana aanmoedigen in de WK-wedstrijd tegen Brazilië (achtste finale, 27 juni). Ik ben heel trots de spelers van Ghana ... het is de eerste keer dat Ghana op een WK is, vergeet dat niet! Brazilië is gewaarschuwd!

1 JUNI 2006

Na enkele maanden in Ghana sta ik op het punt terug te keren naar Nederland. Het was erg leuk om mijn vrienden en familie weer te zien, om weer even thuis te zijn. Maar nu ben ik klaar voor mijn terugkeer naar Nederland!

Zeker wat betreft de trainingen heb ik Nederland erg gemist. In Ghana trainde ik voornamelijk op kracht en inhoud. Dat zal me geen kwaad gedaan hebben, hahaha! Maar 'speed work' was er niet bij... er is in Ghana géén atletiekbaan helaas, dus kan ik niet wachten om weer eens een échte '100' te lopen.

Ik vind het jammer dat ik de FBK Games heb gemist. Zeker omdat ik tegen Marion Jones had kunnen lopen... Maar er komen meer kansen!

28 FEBRUARI 2006

Een moeilijke week, een ingewikkelde week... Ik had erg veel aan mijn hoofd en dat resulteerde helaas in een niet zo succesvol optreden tijdens de KBC Flanders Indoor in Gent: zesde in de finale, in 7.41. Kim Gevaert won in een geweldige 7.14!

Een rare week dus. Zoals jullie waarschijnlijk weten, hoop ik ooit voor Nederland te kunnen uitkomen. Dat is één van mijn doelen. Daar komt een heleboel papierwerk bij kijken en de volgende stap in dat proces betekent dat ik voor een paar maanden terug moet naar Ghana. Dit nieuws komt voor mij onverwacht en op een niet zo goed moment; ik kan de start van het outdoor-seizoen vergeten, helaas. Jullie horen snel méér van me!

22 FEBRUARI 2006

Het is me weer gelukt! Net als in 2005 was ik de beste op de 60 meter, tijdens de NK Indoor in Gent.

In de heat kon ik het vrij rustig aan doen; ik won die in 7.49. Ook de andere Haag Atletiek-meiden bereikten de finale, waardoor die voor de helft uit sprintsters van ons team bestond: Asante, Van Assendelft, Spierenburg en Dankwah.

In de finale startte ik erg goed en wist ik Pascal van Assendelft achter me te houden, in 7.38. Mami Asante werd derde.

Voor de wedstrijd in Dusseldorf ontving ik jammergenoeg geen uitnodiging...

13 FEBRUARI 2006

Twee rustige weken zijn achter de rug. Nou ja... rustig: de trainingen gingen gewoon door. Zaterdag 11 februari had ik weer een wedstrijd, in Gent. Het werd een rare middag... de organisatie goochelde met de aanvangstijden, waardoor Mami Asante en ik tijdens een rustige warming up ineens te horen kregen: "jullie moeten lopen, jullie race gaat nú beginnen!" Wel, dat dat een matige 60 werd mag duidelijk zijn: 7.58, zelfde tijd als de winnares; er had deze dag méér ingezeten.

Volgende week wéér Gent: dan de NK Indoor, waarop ik vorig jaar zo mooi de 60 wist te winnen. En vrijdag misschien een meeting in Dortmund!

28 JANUARI 2006

2006 Begint echt goed! Binnen een week verbeterde ik tot tweemaal mijn PR op de 60. In Luxemburg liep ik vrijdag 27 januari in de heat 7.35! In de finale ging bij de start het één en ander mis - meer dan 7.48 en de 7de plaats zat er niet in...

Een dag later naar Groningen (Indoor Martiniplaza), waar ik eerste werd in een klassement over 50 en 60 m: 6.55 en 7.64. En: in totaal acht uur in de auto, haha!

Mijn eerste wedstrijd van 2006, 60 m. indoor in Dortmund (22/01), leverde me meteen winst op. Ik won de finale in 7.42 sec,waarmee ik mijn oude PR (van de NK Indoor-finale van vorig jaar) met 0.04 sec. aanscherpte.
