The Maine Coon Cat

The Maine Coon cat is probably the oldest breed and one of the largest cats in the world. In his old days the Maine coon has probably been wandering around in the state of Maine, USA. The cold New England climate helped to develop the fur of the Maine coon cat. Something he has in common with the Norwegian Forest Cat.

It�s generally assumed that the ancestors of the Maine Coon cat are the American farm cat and some long-hair cats brought to Maine by merchants and sailors from Europe. The breed has been first shown in 1860 at the New York Cat Show. The Maine Coon has been registered in 1861 and won the Square Garden Show in 1895.
The interest for the Maine Coon became less when the Persian cats were brought to the United States. This lasted until 1950. The interest in the Maine Coon grew after the installation of the Breeders union in 1976. In that same year the Maine Coon cat was officially recognized in the United States.

De Maine Coon

De Maine Coon komt de eer toe het oudste ras te zijn en tot een van de grootste rassen te behoren. Waarschijnlijk heeft hij in het begin van zijn geschiedenis vrij rondgezworven in de staat Maine in Amerika, waarbij men onwillekeurig moet denken aan de daar inheemse wasbeer, die wel iets heeft van een gestreepte Maine Coon en ook hetzelfde jachtgedrag vertoont. Het strenge klimaat van New England droeg bij tot de ontwikkeling van de dikke vacht, iets wat hij gemeen heeft met de Noorse Boskat.

Men gaat ervan uit dat de robuuste Amerikaanse boerderijkatten en de lang haarkatten, die handelaren en zeelieden vanuit Europa mee brachten naar Maine, de voorouders zijn van de Maine Coon. Het ras werd voor het eerst geshowd in 1860 op de New York Cat Show, werd in 1861 geregistreerd en won op de Madison Square Garden Show van 1895. Maar toen de Perzen eenmaal in de Verenigde Staten op het toneel verschenen, verminderde de belangstelling en het duurde tot 1950 voor die weer naar voren kwam. Dit werd nog extra gestimuleerd door de totstandkoming van een Vereniging van Fokkers en Liefhebbers van de Maine Coon in 1976, hetzelfde jaar dat het ras in de Verenigde Staten officieel erkend werd.

Maine Coons zijn aanhankelijke, gezellige huisdieren.
De Maine Coon heeft twee unieke eigenschappen: hij slaapt op de meest oncomfortabele plaatsen en in de meest vreemde posities en hij staat bekend om zijn schattige, bedeesde piepgeluidjes

Kenmerken
- groot en goed gespierd. De Maine Coon kan zes kilo wegen, hoewel ook zwaardere exemplaren bekend zijn. Gaston is bijna 10 kg.
- een vrij grote kop, maar klein in verhouding tot het lichaam. De kop moet wigvormig zijn met een matig lange neus. De ogen zijn groot en staan enigszins
schuin en wijd uit elkaar. De Maine Coon heeft stevige jukbeenderen en een stevige kin, waardoor hij een vrij vierkante snuit heeft.
- flinke oren (bij voorkeur getooid met lynxpluimpjes)
- brede borst met volle halskraag
- sterke poten met grote ronde voeten
- de staart is bezet met lang, uiteenwaaierend haar en eindigt in een soort pluim. De staart is even lang als het lichaam.
