           Salamanca 2005

The big meeting was during the weekend of 3 and 4 December 2005

The year meeting of the Sociedad de la Vihuela was successfully organized
in this wonderful city of Salamanca.

The Sociedad has already 150 members and the number is growing daily.
The name is "de la Vihuela" but it's a Sociedad for all the historical plucked 
instruments like lutes, theorbes, mandolins, guitars etc.

  The old University of Salamanca
The University of Salamanca´s origin goes back of its General Estudio (General Study) in 1218 by king Alfonso IX.
The construction of the building began in 1415 by order of Pope Luna (Benedicto XIII) and completed in 1435 by Rodríguez Carpintero.

During the opening Carlos Gonzalez explained that the expectations for this year were completed successfully.

There were interesting conferences.

One by Jesús Jiménez Pelayo (Centro de Documentación
Musical de Andalucía). La música antigua y el CDMA.
Jesús described us the work and the collections of the CDMA.
An important institution for every person interested in historical, musical and musicological research.

Another one by Francisco Roa. Miguel de Fuenllana, entre impresos y
manuscritos. Very well presented by Francisco the way editors and composers worked together to edit the
beautiful books we still now can hold in our hands to play this incredible music.

Presentation of the second number of the Hispanica Lyra by Juan Carlos Ayala.
The second number is as well presented as the first one.
Beatiuful layout by José Antonio Benito and with a variety of articles; all of them in Spanish of course.


Carlos Gonzalez: Iconografía de vihuelas, laúdes y
guitarras en la Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba.
Carlos, musical instruments maker and well known thanks his iconographic research, has found in
Córdoba very well preserved representations of
different instruments like vihuelas, lutes, etc., which haven't been studied until now by anybody.
He asked everybody to look for iconographic information in churches and buildings
in there own region to complete as good as possible the history of musical instruments.

The meeting ended on Sunday evening and I went back to Utrecht with a very good feeling.
The Sociedad de la Vihuela has a strong starting impulse with very capable and professional members.
They have good financial support to edit a wonderful magazine with very interesting articles.
Next year I'll be for sure in Spain to meet again this nice and friendly people.
I would say:

Larga vida a la Sociedad de la Vihuela !!!!
