| In 2005 werd van Merwijk uitgenodigd om aan de Academie van Sarajevo (Bosnië en Herzegovina) masterclasses saxofoon te geven. De uitnodiging kwam via het Nederlands Blazers Ensemble en 'Musicians Without Borders'. In Sarajevo ontmoette hij klarinettist/saxofonist Adnan Cico en met hem ontwikkelde hij het plan in Bosnië en Herzegovina een blazers ensemble op te richten naar het voorbeeld van het Nederlands Blazers Ensemble. Toen van Merwijk Cico vroeg of hij hem wilde helpen met het opzetten van zo'n ensemble antwoordde Cico: "It is impossible but we will do it."
En ze deden het inderdaad! Met financiële en logistieke steun van het Nederlands Blazers Ensemble en 'Musicians Without Borders' is 'Winds Of Change' (de naam is bedacht door saxofonist Timur Sijaric, een van de leden van WOC) inmiddels een groot succes. WOC heeft vier keer met veel succes door Bosnië en Herzegovina en daarbuiten getoerd, live voor TV en radio opgetreden, het prestigieuze Sarajevo Winterfestival geopend en in de Grote Zaal van het Concertgebouw van Amsterdam gestaan met het Nederlands Blazers Ensemble. In anderhalf jaar tijd...... In 2005 van Merwijk was invited to give masterclasses of saxophone at the Sarajevo Music Academy (Bosnia and Herzegovina) by the Netherlands Wind Ensemble and 'Musicians Without Borders'. In Sarajevo he met clarinettist/saxophonist Adnan Cico and together with him he developed the plan to set up a wind ensemble in Bosnia and Herzegovina (having the Netherlands Wind Ensemble in mind as an example). When van Merwijk asked Cico to help him found such an ensemble Cico answered: "It is impossible but we will do it."
And so they did! Supported financially and logisitically by the Netherlands Wind Ensemble and 'Musicians Without Borders' 'Winds Of Change' (the name invented by saxophonist Timur Sijaric, one of WOC's members) has become a big hit. WOC did four succesful concert tours in Bosnia and Herzegovina (and a bit abroad), had live TV and radio appearances, opened the prestigious Sarajevo Winterfestival 2008 and performed in the world famous Concertgebouw Big Hall (Amsterdam, the Netherlands) together with the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. All this in one year and a half....

| Winds Of Change wordt gevormd door jonge musici en muziekstudenten uit heel Bosnië en Herzegovina, aangevuld met een paar professionele musici uit BiH. Na de oorlog die Bosnië en Herzegovina trof was ook van de muzikale infrastuctuur weinig over en met dit voor de regio volstrekt unieke ensemble zetten we een belangrijke stap om de muzikale rijkdom van de voor de oorlog terug te laten keren. Met een sterk artistiek team dat behalve van Merwijk uit Adnan Cico en slagwerker Davor Maraus uit BiH en trombonist Jaume Gavilán Agulló uit Spanje bestaat en het management onder leiding van Baya Radoslav Corlija verovert dit multi-etnische blazers ensemble de harten van velen in Zuid-Oost Europa en daarbuiten. Met een mix van klassieke en hedendaagse muziek, pop en jazz en (zeer belangrijk) traditionele muziek uit de Balkan (maar dan wel op een geheel eigen manier) brengt Winds Of Change iets wat nog niet bestond..... Winds Of Change is formed by young musicians and music students from Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a few professinal musicians from BiH added. After the war that hit Bosnia and Herzegovina not much was left of the musical infrastructure and with this ensemble, quite unique in the region, we take a step forward to regaining the musical richness of prewar times. The strong artistic team that consists (besides van Merwijk) of Adnan Cico and percussionist Davor Maraus from BiH and trombonist Jaume Gavilán Agulló from Spain and the management team headed by Baya Radoslav Corlija see this multi-ethnic wind ensemble reach out to the hearts of many in South-East Europe and abroad. With a mixture of classical and contemporary music, pop and jazz and traditional music from the Balkans (but with a very distinct WOC 'flavour') Winds Of Change brings you something that did not exist before.... |  | |
