Van Merwijk studeerde klassiek saxofoon aan het Utrechts Conservatorium bij Ed Bogaard, André Hemmers en Iwan Roth en behaalde daar zijn diploma's Docerend en Uitvoerend Musicus en de aantekening Lichte Muziek.

Hij is baritonsaxofonist en mede-oprichter van het Aurelia Saxofoon Kwartet (sinds 1982) Hij maakt deel uit van het Nederlands Blazers Ensemble (vn. alt en bariton).Hij remplaceert in het Koninklijk Concertgebouw Orkest, het Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, de Nederlandse radio-orkesten e.a. In het mede door hem opgerichte Blazers Ensemble van Bosnië en Herzegovina, de 'Winds Of Change' speelt hij sopraansax.

Van Merwijk studied classical saxophone at the Utrechts Conservatorium (The Netherlands) with Ed Bogaard, André Hemmers and Iwan Roth and got both a Bachelor and Master degree at this institute.

He is baritone saxophonist and co-founder of the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet (since 1982). He is a member of the Netherlands Wind Ensemble (mainly alto and baritone) and freelances in orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the dutch radio orchestras. In the wind ensemble of Bosnia and Herzegovina (co-founded by van Merwijk) the 'Winds Of Change' he plays the soprano saxophone.
