De meeste medische concentratietermen zijn voldoende duidelijk: mg/L is milligram per liter, pg/dL is picogram per deciliter, enzovoorts. Een enkele term lijkt wat ongebruikelijk: fL voor femtoliter (is gelijk aan kubieke micron) of meq voor millimol-equivalent. Osm slaat op de osmolaliteit. De breuk /d wil zeggen per dag en /h is per uur.
Termen met een U erin slaan doorgaans op standaard metingen van de biologische activiteit van een verbinding. Voorbeeld: IU is international units (internationale eenheden). Een wazige term is de EU. Deze kan van alles betekenen: Ehrlich units, Elisa units (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), enzyme units, endotoxin units (soms ETU). kDa staat voor kilodalton, met dalton = atomic mass unit.
Enigszins lastig is de conversie van een concentratie van gram per liter naar mol per liter of omgekeerd. Daarvoor moet de molmassa bekend zijn. Onderstaande tabel geeft van een groot aantal in de geneeskunde gebruikelijke verbindingen de molmassa en de conversie tussen gebruikelijke eenheden.
