Easy String Calc.

Easy String Calc., or for short ESC, is a program for analyzing and optimizing the scale of pianos and grand-pianos and is a valuable, if not an indispensable, tool for designing and restoring of pianos and grand-pianos.

Normally the program analyses and optimizes with Röslau steel wire. There is the possibility for every chord to chose for an other type of steel namely Pure Sound (PS) or Pure Sound Strong (PSS) or Paulello wire type xm, 0 or 1.

The program is also suitable for analyzing and optimizing for instruments with 97 keys. (Bösendorfer and Stuart & Sons)
Easy String Calc. is the only scaling program capable to analyze and optimize the bass which except mono-chords and bi-chords, also includes three-chords.
Especially for instruments with relative short bass strings, optimization with ESC of the bass gives a much better result compared to the original.
There are two English versions one for European wire gauges and one for American wire gauges.
In each version of the program a standard version and a professional version is available.
The standard version can easily be extended to a professional one.
The professional version gives the possibility to design the tension and the inharmonicity independent from each other. This possibility is mainly applicable by factories, because when they design a new instrument, they have the possibility to apply string lengths calculated by ESC.

During analysis the program calculates  among others the following:
(# means that this item is except in a table also is shown in a graph)
Inharmonicity Constant #.
Inharmonicity Quality #.
Load of the strings #.
Total diameter of the strings.
Tension of the chords in kgf #.
Tension of the chords in newton.
Tension of the strings in Kgf and Newton.
Specific tension of the strings in Kgf/mm^2 and Newton/mm^2.
Longitudinal vibration frequency of the strings.
Contact time hammer-string #.
Relative contact time hammer-string #.
Elongation of the strings.
Basic Sound Volume #.
Stringing list.
Material price per string and total price for all strings.

The program ESC calculates all previous mentioned items and optimizes the scale to default target values. The user can, if he wishes, deviate from these default target values.
In the professional version the lengths of the strings can be optimized. Also the lengths of the duplex part of the strings can be optimized.
In the following link
“ 3 optimisation methods for the scaling of piano strings” is described the results of the redesign of a grand including optimizing the length of the strings.   In the link  "Redesign of the scale of a Bösendorfer grand” is described the optimizing of a Bösendorfer grand where the lenghts of the strings not have been changed and in the bas the goal was to achieve an inharmonicity as close as possible to the inharmonicity of a large concert grand. In the link "The importance of a low inharmonicity in the bass" an optimisation of the scale is described of a small grand piano. Also here the lengths of the strings were not modified and in the bass the goal was to achieve an inharmonicity as close as possible to the inharmonicity of a large concert grand. This link contains sound examples.
