Professor Huib de Vriend

Professor Huib de Vriend is With Nature’s director and only employee. He is a civil engineer by training and received his PhD from Delft University of Technology. His experience lies in hydrodynamics, sediment transport and morphology in rivers, estuaries, coastal waters and shallow shelf seas, and in the interaction of these phenomena with the biotic ecosystem. Since 2007 he is director of the EcoShape Foundation, which co-ordinates the Dutch 30 M€ innovation programme ‘Building with Nature’. This programme aims at infrastructure development in surface waters making use of the forces of nature while creating new room for nature. It is executed by a broad consortium of government institutions, academia, applied research organisations, consultancies and engineering contractors.

Prof. de Vriend is a member of the National Commission for the EIA, and of the thinktank on flood safety of the Netherlands Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment.
